Various of a Taiz street damaged by conflict, people walking LEADIN:Damaged banknotes are being repaired rather than taken out of circulation in Yemen.The country's poor economy and a lack of supply means torn and shabby notes are being used to pay salaries.STORYLINE:It's an intricate job but one with very obvious financial rewards.Mohammed Al-Qaisar repairs damaged banknotes at his little desk on the pavement in the centre of Taiz.And his skills are in demand.In the past, notes in such a poor condition would be taken out of circulation - but not now.So people wait for Al-Qaisar to make repairs, ensuring their money will still be accepted in shops.He wants people to take better care of the notes by not fixing them with adhesive tape which distorts the paper and by also protecting them in a wallet.In downtown Taiz, people pay for goods with banknotes that are long passed their prime.And government workers collect salaries in cash from the post office - again, in notes that are damaged.Abdul-Halim Fadel, civil servant in Education Office in Taiz, says people can't use \"cut\" banknotes.But he adds: \"when you go to post office, they give you cut banknotes, banks gives you cut banknotes, salaries are cut banknotes\".Damaged notes had been earmarked by the Yemen Central Bank to be withdrawn from circulation and destroyed.But the country's dire economic situation, instability, and shortage of cash means they have been used to pay salaries.And economic analyst Mohammed Al-Ramim says people who receive them are \"lucky\".\"There are plenty of employees up to this point without salaries,\" he says. He blames the Houthi rebels for draining cash reserves under their control to pay for their war efforts.The country's economy has buckled under the weight of the conflict.Yemenis face fewer employment
