Close of handwriting script reading: \"the end\" appearing on the computer monitorLEADIN:Computer scientists have created software that can replicate the handwriting of anyone you choose - from Plato to Shakespeare. Its inventors say as well as creating new works the famous didn't write, the handwriting tool could be used by banks for security and in the printing industry.STORYLINE: From Shakespeare to Agatha Christie, researchers at University College London are programming computers to generate script that could be realistic enough to fool handwriting experts.Researcher Tom Haines says that so far, the only giveaway sign is the fact that the computer script is printed. With the aid of a microscope you can see it wasn't written with pen and ink.He gives a demonstration of how it's done, by taking some of his colleague's handwriting and carefully dissecting each letter and space in every word.Haines explains: \"Okay so I'm going to tag the word monosyllables and what I do is I chop out each letter. So I work out that the O starts there and the M ends there and then I type M on the keyboard to indicate that this is an M and I chop out the O and type O to indicate that it's an O. And it's essentially about going through and cutting out each letter one after the other so the N, O and this is actually an S I know it doesn't look much like an S but it is. And so you're cutting out and it works out which ones are the ligatures attaching the letters simply by virtue of them being the ones you don't tag, their being connect letters and sometimes - er it's an A - you have to zoom out to figure what's going on.\"This process of cutting and tagging can be done to any handwriting scanned into the computer, creating a replica of the real thing. But handwriting experts don't just rely on writing style to detect fakes. There are other unique markers that distinguish a genuine piece of writing, such as incorrect spelling - something forgers often forget. There are a host of things that can give away a forger if you know what to look for.Haines says: \"Probably the easiest is if there's any kind of spelling mistakes. So our system doesn't do spelling mistakes unless you type the spelling mistake into the system. You also find that particularly messy handwriting can throw the system a bit in that it actually makes the messy handwriting neater relative to the real thing. It's a weird one. You also get some textual distortions sometimes where it has to stretch something slightly and so if you look very closely at the edge you'll see a sort of smearing and the best indicator is that because it's not actually written with a pen, it's printed out, if you get out a magnifying glass, the fake stuff, you can see the printed dot pattern.\"Haines recruits a fellow researcher to write a script which he dictates from a book. This researcher has been chosen because he has relatively neat handwriting. A quirk of the software invented by Haines is that it tends to make scrawly handwriting more legible.According to the researchers here, the ultimate aim of this software is to not to help people commit fraud. One use could be to help companies such as banks create realistic-looking handwritten envelopes to obscure important official documents going through the post.Another is to allow those unable to write through disability to write again.Greeting card companies are also considering whether the software could be useful to them, Haines says. But in a world where there are scores of fonts and innumerable ways to create text, we could be forgiven for wondering why we should bother with computer-simulated handwriting.Haines says: \"If you just want to communicate, then yes you're going to use a normal computer and use normal text, but there's something personal about handwriting, something that says, you know, 'this is my handwriting I'm putting in the effort to write this message', so when there is that extra emotional context, handwriting is still very, very important and a lot of people still do care to send letters.\"Once Haines has scanned in his colleague's writing he can use it to generate more text in the same style. The programme is called \"My Text In Your Handwriting\".====Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: info@aparchive.com.
