The aerobic zone, the zone that you want your heart rate in to exercise 30 minutes five times a week, according to the American Heart Association, is about 50 to 80 percent of that so roughly if you're 40 you want it between 120 to 140 beats per minute for 30 minutes, that's aerobic activity.\"41. Wide of instructor and players wrapping up game with a cheerLEADIN:Tennis enthusiasts and beginners alike are honing their skills and getting a high-energy workout into the bargain with Cardio Tennis. This group fitness activity aims to deliver a full body, calorie burning workout to music, and devotees say it's a great way to meet people too. STORYLINE:Looking for a new high-energy fitness class?Cardio Tennis is a group activity that combines a traditional tennis game with a high-intensity aerobic cardiovascular workout.Enthusiasts say the loud pop music playing in the background turns the game into a party on the court. The players' feet should never stop moving during the entire one hour class, making it a tough cardio workout. Cardio Tennis is now on offer to guests and locals at the Ritz-Carlton hotel at Marina Del Rey, California, played on courts perched next to the Pacific Ocean. There are almost 2,000 facilities offering Cardio Tennis throughout the US, with 1.82 million participants in America, according to the Cardio Tennis Industry Association. It is played in select locations in 30 countries. The rules are the same as traditional tennis, but the class is much more intense with fast paced drills.Cardio Tennis trainer Chris Ojakian is a certified tennis professional and co-owner of elite racquet sports, a management company that helps set up hotel tennis programs throughout the US. \"It's pure fun. It's pure party on a court. You see how much socialisation there is. There are high-fives going on. We use cardio balls, we use music, we use heart rate monitors and what it does is it really gets the people to come back because of how intense it is, how many touches on the ball you get and also because of the music and the fun factor,\" he says.Cardio Tennis has 6-8 players per court.Ojakian keeps the energy moving and feeds balls based on everyone's individual ability and fitness level. The Cardio Tennis ball is lighter than a regular tennis ball, to make it easier to get across the net.Heart rate monitors are provided and are worn by each player.Participants must elevate their heart rates into the aerobic training zone. Promoters of the game claim you can burn more calories playing Cardio Tennis than in singles or doubles tennis.According to the Cardio Tennis website, women can burn 300 to 500 calories per hour and men can burn between 500 to 1,000. These students say it's the instructor and the music that make the class so much fun.Players get short cycles of high intensity workout and then periods to play more slowly, similar to interval training.Ojakian says its the social element to the class that is making it popular. \"Normal tennis, you know you're serving, you're picking up a ball, you're reserving. Here there is so much social interaction as opposed to let's say a spinning class. We are going to equivalate (equate) this to any other fitness programs out there. You don't high five the person on the bike next to you or in a kickboxing class but here it's about people that are coming together and trying to be social as well as getting a great workout so I think why it's really caught on is because of that socialisation factor,\" he says.Corporate retail consultant, Katrina Glusac, 45, from Venice Beach, California, says she wanted a serious cardio workout to help her lose weight.\"I love to play tennis but I really wanted to add that cardio aspect to it and I don't want to get tramped in a gym so this is paradise. Got a marina behind us, my son plays tennis on the court next door while I'm playing. It's a bunch of people having a really good time. What I'm noticing is I'm really actually starting to drop the weight whereas working out constantly in the gym or other things wasn't doing it for me so this is pretty magic for me,\" says Glusac. For TV producer Michael Hastin, 43, from Marina del Rey, Cardio Tennis gives the opportunity to practise lots of strokes and cram a lot of net play into the hour.\"I love Cardio Tennis because I love tennis. I love that it's a great workout for one hour. The heart is just moving. We are keeping our legs moving the entire time. There is a competition factor that you don't get, there is a team competition factor that you don't always get in just playing one on one tennis with a friend. You're rooting for everybody and you're playing short games so you get a chance to play with everybody and it's a lot of fun,\" he says.Rachel Czer, 34, from Mar Vista, California says the class really pushes players to the limit.\"It's always fun. It just keeps you toned everywhere using every single part of your body to get that ball across especially when you're exhausted towards the end you just really have to push through. It's just a great time,\" she says.Dr. John Kennedy is the Director of Preventive Cardiology and Wellness at Marina del Rey Hospital, and author of The 15 Minute Heart Cure and The Heart Health Bible. He says Cardio Tennis provides a good workout for keeping the heart healthy.\"The American Heart Association recommends that we exercise for 30 minutes using moderate aerobic activity five times a week. That's a lot. What's great about Cardio Tennis is that it allows us to measure our heart rate to reach and attain and achieve our target heart rates, all while honing our skills in tennis and enjoying great music,\" he says.Kennedy says wearing a heart monitor lets players see how hard they need to work to get their heart rate up to the recommended level. He explains what aerobic activity means. \"Aerobic activity is roughly the amount of activity it takes to sweat, or what I tell my patients, the amount of physical activity it would take for you to make it hard for you to sing your favourite song at the same time. So aerobic activity is that amount of activity but nowadays Cardio Tennis for example allows us to use a fitness wearable heart rate monitor to measure that target heart rate, that aerobic zone that you want to exercise in to achieve the maximum heart rate results,\" says Kennedy.Cardio Tennis offers a heart rate zone map giving players their maximum heart rate and recommended training zone during the game.Kennedy says he advises his patients to use a formula to calculate how high their heart rate needs to be in order for their activity level to be classed as aerobic. \"Maximum predicted rate is a formula. It's calculated by number 220 minus your age so for example if you're 40 years of age, 220 minus 40 is 180. 180 beats per minute would be your maximum predicted heart rate, if you were 40 years of age. The aerobic zone, the zone that you want your heart rate in to exercise 30 minutes five times a week according to the American Heart Association is about 50 to 80 per cent of that so roughly if you're 40 you want it between 120 to 140 beats per minute for 30 minutes, that's aerobic activity,\" he says. It's the end of the hour-long class, and these players look like they've certainly pushed themselves into that aerobic zone.====Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: info@aparchive.com.
