Car manufacturers and software makers are using the latest app based programs that turn your car into an extension of your smartphone. STORY-LINE:At the Mobile World Congress in Shanghai, 5G is one of the buzzwords for connectivity. 5G is the next major phase of telecommunications standards and it's about to revolutionise how you use your car and smartphone. Auto makers want to enhance the driving experience by expanding in-car connectivity.A number of manufacturers are working on new systems to make it easier for vehicles to talk to apps. Ford's product - Sync3 - makes the car an extension of your smartphone. Ford has partnered with a number of local Chinese companies – like \"smart parking\" app Dingding Tingche, which allows a person to operate a parking barrier from the comfort of their vehicle. \"Sync3 is faster and easier to use than our previous generations of in-vehicle infotainment,\" says Director of Connected Vehicles and Services for Ford Asia Pacific, Julius Marchwicki.\"It improves customer's lives by making it easy to place phone calls, access their music, and use some of their favorite applications inside of the vehicle with Ford AppLink. And so much of that we're showing today is related to Ford AppLink and some of the great partner applications that we can use now, hands-free, voice-activated inside the car.\"Ford has even added Chinese writing recognition to their touch-screens.\"So specifically in China, Sync3 launched earlier this year on our brand new Edge and Taurus products. With Sync3 obviously we get a beautiful 8-inch capacitive touch screen, hands-free voice control, we've added Chinese handwriting recognition. So a customer can actually write in Chinese an address of where they'd want to navigate to, which addresses a huge customer want for China.\"The tech industry says car connectivity is driving a lot of innovation. Analyst Ishan Dutt from Canalys says more companies are getting involved in the trend for fear of being left behind.\"We've seen a big commitment by a lot of different players to connected cars and autonomous driving in the last 18 months especially. And that's been driven by the fact that as soon as one OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) gets in, others feel pressured to also commit to a strategy and proper timelines. As part of that here in MWC Shanghai we've seen local players like Alibaba and SAIC ramping up their presence, and at the same time you have some international vendors like Ford and Volvo trying to understand the Chinese market and get their own brands out here as well,\" he says. One of the newest players on the scene is Alibaba. The e-commerce giant is unveiling its first car with Alibaba's in-built YunOS software.Manufactured by Chinese car brand SAIC, it has not been officially launched yet. But it was on display – although with no features turned on – for MWC visitors to take a look.Dutt says the move by Alibaba into the connected vehicle space could indicate future plans to grow the business even further.\"I think one thing that is interesting about Alibaba is that they have sort of been at MWC Shanghai quite consumer-focused but I think connected cars and getting a presence in that space allows them to move to maybe bigger projects that they want to work on – something like smart cities – which have a natural sort of connection, I guess, to what's happening in the car space.\"He also says that connectivity in cars is a natural first-step on the path to autonomous driving.\"A lot of vendors want to make the car sort of a new way of accessing mobile services in the first place and as part of that I think you see a lot of partnerships to offer urban mobility services – things like ride hailing apps as well as parking services, valet services, within cities. To sort of make consumers address a lot of the pain points that they have around driving in cities. And I think that sets an eco-system in place that allows for autonomous vehicles to then come in and capture people who are used to already using apps and their car as more than just a driving vehicle.\"Mobile World Congress Shanghai ran from June 29 to July 1 2016.
