Various of Berlin exhibition grounds exteriorLEADIN:Europe's leading consumer electronics fair IFA is nearing and - as in previous years - new smartphones are likely to take centre stage in Berlin. But don't expect any great technological leaps - experts say smartphones may have now reached \"peak innovation.\"STORYLINE:The annual technology fair IFA (Internationale Funkausstellung) is the biggest consumer electronics fair in Europe.Starting September 2, over 240,000 visitors are expected to descend on these exhibitions grounds in Berlin to see new products from over 1,600 exhibitors.Among them are around 6,000 media representatives, many of those travelling to Berlin to see the latest in smartphone and smartwatch designs. At IFA in 2015, Chinese tech maker Huawei released its Huawei Mate S, while Sony showed its new flagship Sony Xperia Z5.This year, Huawei is expected to show at least one new smartphone, Sony is expected to launch the latest addition to its Xperia line.Chinese companies Lenovo and ZTE are also expected to launch their latest smartphones.Expect better screens, better processors and better cameras - but no major innovations which are likely to dramatically change the smartphone market.\"I think at the moment we have reached some peak of innovation because there is nothing left that you could do which is really new,\" says Amir Tamannai, editor of GIGA Android technology news website.\"I mean, you can make the smartphones more powerful, which nobody really needs because even looking at a scenario where you need all this hardware power - games - every game now runs on almost every smartphone. \"VR is another thing, maybe we need some more power for VR, but that is also something that can be easily done. Displays yes, they can get bigger, they can get more resolution. But then again, there is a biological peak where it doesn't give anymore advantages if you have an even higher resolution.\"Over the last few years, there's been a boom in the mid-range smartphone market, with Chinese companies like Huawei, Xiaomi and ZTE threatening the established players, such as Samsung, with cheaper devices. The once booming global smartphone market is also slowing.According to a forecast by market research company the International Data Corporation (IDC), smartphone sales will increase by 3.1 percent in 2016.That's a steep drop from 10.5 percent growth in 2015 and 27.8 percent growth in 2014.This could also mean less innovation in smartphones, according to Tamannai.\"I think that on the one hand you could just simply say the market is saturated, everybody has a smartphone now and they're settling with their smartphone, or their idea of what a smartphone should be,\" he says.\"So they're not really looking for any new innovations or any new products. On the other side, the manufacturers, they don't really know what to do very innovative with their new products. And, also a good thing for consumers but a bad thing for innovation, mid-range and low budget smartphones have become so versatile, so quality-wise good, that there is no need for the real high-end devices anymore.\"The first iPhone was launched in 2007.Samsung launched its first smartphone, the 'Samsung Instinct', in 2008.In the following years, smartphones made giant technological leaps, year on year.Shu On Kwok, editor of Android Pit technology news website, says a slowdown in innovation is a natural step, something that's also happened to other technologies as markets stabilised.\"We are maybe a little bit spoiled in the past with bigger steps, evolutions or we think that was some kind of revolutionising stuff in the smartphones,\" he says.\"But it's the same with the PC business in the past. You get smaller, smaller steps in the development of features and new stuff. They're coming, new features in to the smartphone, but they are not that big anymore.\"But at the same time, smartphones are becoming more and more integral in our daily lives.Cars, fridges, lamps and thermostats are all becoming connected to the internet. At the centre of the web of connected gadgets sits the smartphone as the controller. This is where innovation in the future lies, claims Shu On Kwok.\"The smartphone is the brain for other stuff. You can control drones, you can watch VR movies on there, or VR games and stuff like that,\" he says.\"All the ecosystem around the smartphones are getting more and more important. All the connected devices, like smartwatches. Okay, they haven't taken off yet. But there are small, small steps going to be connected to the smartphone and they are getting bigger and bigger.\"The smartphones launched at IFA will still boast some improvements and new technologies.Steps will be taken to improve the devices, even though they may feel like small advancements, says Tamannai.\"I think the optimisations we can expect in the next years, and we hope for, are more like more battery life, and probably better cameras and better fingerprint sensors and the more efficient use of a fingerprint sensor,\" he says.\"In any way, the more efficient use of the hardware and of the possibilities of a smartphone.\"The giant of the smartphone market remains Samsung.According to IDC, the South Korean smartphone company had a 22.4 percent market share in the second quarter of 2016, up by 1.1 percent from the same period a year earlier.Below is Apple with an 11.8 percent market share and Huawei in third place with 9.4 percent.Samsung is unlikely to show a new smartphone at IFA, the company unveiled this Galaxy Note 7 in July and its Galaxy S7 earlier this year at the Mobile World Conference in Barcelona.Instead, Samsung is likely to launch a new smartwatch in Berlin, the successor to the Samsung Galaxy Gear II which the company launched at IFA last year. Samsung holds a 16 percent share of the global smartwatch market, according to the IDC, far behind leader Apple at 47 percent. In total, some 3.5 million smartwatches were shipped in the second quarter of 2016, according to IDC. That's down 32 percent in comparison to the year before. In general, smartwatches have not lived up to their billing as the new saviours of innovation in the connectivity sector.\"When Samsung showed the Gear S II last year it was a cool device. It had this ring which you can steer the whole smartwatch and it was a cool, innovative way to use a smartwatch. It's cool. It's a cool device. It's cool for some people. \"Cool for nerds, for tech-interested people. But it's nothing the masses out there really need or want.\"But Jean-Daniel Ayme, Corporate Vice President for the European division at Samsung Electronics, says it's too early to properly judge the smartwatch market. He quotes a report from global research company Strategy Analytics which shows more smartwatches were sold in the fourth quarter of 2015 than watches made by Swiss companies.\"So this is still a nascent market, right? I think in Q4 (fourth quarter) of last year this is the first time when the smartwatch market actually overcame the Swiss watch market,\" he says.\"Which is a milestone that we should take as a very encouraging sign that this is a growing market.\"Product launch events ahead of IFA begin on August 31.The trade fair opens its doors to the public on September 2 and runs through September 7.====Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: info@aparchive.com.
