But while Orlando put a somber mood over the event, one the evening's honorees, Harvey Fierstein, put the importance of the honor in perspective.\"Anything you can do positive for the community is always - and to encourage other people to do stuff is the way to do it. You never know, there's that kid - that kid sitting at home watching TV saying, 'I don't have to be ashamed of who I am,'\" Fierstein said.  He stood with another honoree. Subhi Nahas escaped from Syria in 2012 for fear of reprisals for being gay. It's illegal in the war-torn country. And there are more than 70 other countries that have outlawed homosexuality. But there are still problems in the United States when it comes to equality and gun violence. Both came together during the tragedy in Orlando when a gunman opened fire in a gay nightclub, killing 49. Fierstein agrees that it's time for the LGBT community to take on the gun lobby. \"I think they're going to find out they picked on the wrong group at last. We don't take this stuff lying down. You know, we're slow and steady but we win our wars. The biggest war with LGBT rights was just being seen as a civil right. When I was a kid, we weren't seen as a civil right. When I was a kid we were still listed as a disease with the American Medical Association. We won those wars, and now it's these little battles, winning these battles around the world,\" Fierstein said.Fierstein then grabbed Nahas. \"That's why we're so glad he's is here with us tonight... We're gonna get married and have a big gay wedding right here at this church,\" Fierstein said.Former tennis great Billie Jean King was also being honored. On the red carpet she expressed the importance of being together.\"It's tough, but the positive side is the community is getting together, it's reconnecting. It's being there, just praying for the victims and their family, being connected to what happened. And also to remind us, we're very fortunate still to be alive. It's our job to keep pushing the envelope, so everybody can be equal, everybody can be free, everybody can be safe.\"King is frustrated that this week's failure to pass legislation that prevents people on the no-fly list from buying guns.\"The Democrats tried, and the Republicans closed session, so I don't know. I love John Lewis, what an icon trying to do that sit-in, and the other Democrats trying with all their heart and mind. Something has to happen, though. What really gets me crazy about congress, not all of them, but of them care about election and then winning. What we need to care about now is the American people and who elected them. I don't think that happens anymore. I think all they care about is getting elected. Maybe we should have shorter terms. Maybe we should only have a maximum of three terms. They can't be there until they are 108. I don't know, but we got to do something.\"The LGBT community has been successful in changing laws and gaining equality. But are they powerful enough to take on the gun lobby?  Actor Wilson Cruz seems to think it's possible.\"We have reason to take on gun violence. The violence against LGBT people is very real and I hope that after we finished mourning we will use our collective voice and the power behind this community to actually take it on in a real way, along with mental health issues. I think they go hand in hand. And I think as a community we're capable of doing that,\" Cruz said.Former 'Jersey Shore' star Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi was also at the event. \"I'm wearing rainbow to represent the LGBT community. You know, obviously what happened in Orlando is disgusting and awful. I just really wanted to show my support, so I got my rainbow as much as I can. You know my best friend is here, who is gay. You just got to show your support and know that this isn't going to happen. We can't let this happen,\" Polizzi said.Rachel Platten was one of the evening's performers.\"It really is a humongous honor to have been asked to do tribute for Orlando. Like the rest of the world I was completely shocked and devastated. The fact that I get to share music tonight, songs that I wrote when I was hurting is amazing. I hope I get to spread just a little bit of light,\" Platten said.The Trailblazer Honors will be broadcast Saturday on VH1 and LOGO networks.
