Cox and her family had a particular connection with the East London Mosque.Mosque trustee Doctor Muhammad Bari became friends with Cox's husband Brendan while he was an advisor to former Prime Minister Tony Blair.\"It is really a sad period for personally as a friend as well as for the whole of the country and international humanity\", he says.At the start of Iftar prayers are sung and respects paid to Cox, who was described as a politician who had touched the lives and hearts of so many.Thurdsay night is also the eve of the historic referendum on whether Britain should remain in or out of the European Union. In recent weeks there have been allegations that politics of hate have slipped into the campaigning, with Muslims, refugees and EU migrant workers as targets.Writer Victoria Brittain was one of the guests invited. She says that evenings like this multicultural Iftar are particularly important at times of division.\"You see a room full of Muslims, Jewish people, Christians, police officers, all kinds of different British people, that is what London is like.
