They were just cool ideas he wanted to try.\"I just consider myself as a person who wants to do things, you know,\" said Young. \"I don't think it's revolutionary to want to build an electric car when there's so much pollution on the planet and you see the car companies making the same car over and over again and advertising how progressive they are. They build the same thing over and over again. So disappointing to see so little innovation. And then along comes Tesla and blows the doors off all of these guys - especially the German car makers who were going, 'That's a joke. Tesla is a joke.' And suddenly Teslas are flying by them on the road. And they're not advertising. Tesla is Tesla, they just are good. They've done something good. So I think that making an electric car out of a '59 Lincoln is just something I had to do because it's all I could do, and I could do it. And I wanted to do it. I love those old cars, but I didn't like polluting. So it's registered at 55 miles to the gallon. It's a '59 Lincoln Continental.\"So when the 70-year-old singer-songwriter got the notion to turn his beloved classic Lincoln into an electric vehicle, he just went for it instead of considering it unnecessary or impossible.\"Well a lot of people don't have the wherewithal to try to do something like that. I'm not trying to make it so that I can sell it to anybody. I just want to say here it is, look, this thing exists. It's great. I just crossed 55,000 miles in it, so I drive it all the time. I love it. It's not just something I did and forgot about. It's a great car. And doing that and other things, it's just the way it is,\" he explained. The same passion inspired Young to develop Pono, a high-resolution digital music system that began with a Kickstarter page. Young wanted today's listeners, many of whom are accustomed to the compressed sounds of MP3s, to experience the full breadth of sound that vinyl record albums bring. So he took his music off iTunes and streaming sites and created a playback system that delivers all the aural intricacies lost in compression.\"I like to do things where I see a hole and I want to say something. Like with music, I see the quality of the listening experience is not what I remember, not what I wanted to sell. So I stopped selling that. Now we can buy CDs or vinyl or Pono or any other high-res service that you want, just because that's what the music sounds like and I can't sell something that's only five percent of what I made, you know. I just can't do it. It doesn't sound good either. Doesn't make you feel good. No goosebumps anymore, nothing. The music's very flat on these iTunes phones,\" he said.
