Wide of Imbaba Bridge from shoreline LEADIN:The 125-year-old Imbaba Bridge was the first link between the cities of Cairo and Giza and still carries railway lines running between northern and southern Egypt. But despite being a famous icon of the River Nile, the bridge is slowly deteriorating and is in need of repair.STORYLINE:The Imbaba bridge is one of the icons of Egypt's River Nile - but it has seen better days. This historic piece of engineering has become a celebrated landmark, featuring in several movies and television series, such as the 1978-film 'Death on the Nile' with master detective Hercule Poirot. But heavy modern traffic has left visible wear. The bridge was constructed 125 years ago in 1891, and was the first to connect both sides of the River Nile. It's one of eight functioning bridges that currently link Egypt's capital, Cairo and the country's third largest city, Giza, across the river. Rust is corroding the metal frame and cars move slowly over the bridge due to damaged pavements and bumps. But transport officials say the bridge is not a top priority for Egypt's government. Mohamed Shehata, head of the Egyptian Committee of Transportation, says the country needs to concentrate resources on constructing new highways, bridges and roads. \"The bridge was completely affected by the Egyptian uprising back in 2011. It's had a lot of damage from that time until now,\" he says.\"We can't refurbish it now as we have other priorities like the National Project for Roads and Highways. These projects are more important in order to rebuild our economy. \"So it is impossible for us to leave a damaged and deserted road without rebuilding it and turn to refurbish the Imbaba Bridge that is still efficiently working at the moment. But in the coming years we have big plans to refurbish and develop the Imbaba bridge.\" The first version of the bridge was constructed by a French company and was designed to allow trains and carts to move in both directions at the same time.Before then, railways from the north stopped at the eastern bank of the Nile. Passengers and goods then had to cross the river by ferry, before transferring onto another train on the western bank.The Egyptian government decided to rebuild the bridge in 1912 so it could bear more weight, as trains were getting heavier and cars were gradually replacing carts and donkeys. Belgian company La Societe Anonyme Baume \u0026 Marpent was responsible for the new design.Their model can be still seen in the National Railway Museum for Trains and Bridges.\"Imbaba Bridge was constructed in 1891. The middle part of the bridge swings to the side, creating an opening for ships. \"The bridge's length is 495 metres. It consists of seven sections one of them can be opened. Cars, vans, mini trucks and half-trucks are the only vehicles - along with trains - allowed to cross the bridge.Buses, heavy trucks and mini buses are banned from passing over the bridge for safety reasons.The bridge's two floors separate trains and cars from pedestrians. The lower floor is designed to hold railway tracks in the middle and a small passage for cars to move one after another on the sides of the bridge.
