Various of the Zurochka looking at the molecule samples with the microscope in the molecular genetics laboratory LEADIN:Russian scientists claim they've developed a compound which accelerates the healing process in wounds as well as tackling viruses.They've produced a synthetic peptide they call Acegram, which they say attracts healthy cells to damaged tissue. STORYLINE: Twenty five years ago the scientists at this laboratory were researching biological weapons.But their work has instead led them to discover how to produce a synthetic molecule which promotes healing according to lead researcher Alexander Zurochka.Zurochka and his team at the Southern Urals State University claim wounds recover three times faster using the compound.They've called the synthetic peptide Acegram.According to Zurochka: \"Recovery comes on a mucus layer, submucosal, muscle mass, hair follicles etcetera. The damaged tissue of an animal recovers completely. That's very important. And we saw this same result later with people.\"But clinical trials involving the compound were only carried out in mice, not human beings.Unusually, to be able to allow the compound to be used by people, Zurochka sought permission to market Acegram as a cosmetic.He claims nine thousand people have already used Acegram without any side effects.Zurochka says: \"We have seen a good therapeutic effectations after using the drug.\"It was selected among hundreds of compounds, according to the team, and involved thousands of tests.During the clinical trials on animals, researchers say they also discovered another feature of the molecule - that it kills bacteria and viruses. Because Zurochka's team has not had the money to fund trials this fact is still not proven by independent physicians.Acegram, which is produced in the form of gels and sprays, is only available in Chelyabinsk where it sells for around twenty five US dollars for a fifteen millilitre phial.Anastasia Faizulina claims to use Acegram on her children.She has two children and started to use it for the treatment of minor infections which the elder daughter brought back from kindergarten and passed onto her brother. Faizulina says: \"In fact in two years that we've been attending kindergarten we didn't have any need to use antibiotics (thanks to Acegram). We use it to treat tonsillitis and for preventive purposes right at the moment when the child is just starting to sneeze and I feel that he's becoming ill.\"The Faizulina family had access to the Acegram compound through their family physician Oleg Zabkov at the private Familia clinic.Zabkov is keen to use the product.He says: \"We have seen a good therapeutic effect. There were no complications after using the drug. The symptoms stopped very quickly, bacterial infections were reduced. I mean tonsillitis, and inflammatory processes of the virus (also retreated).\"Valeriy Cherenkov is the director of immunology at the Institute of the Urals, Russian Academy of Sciences.Cherenkov urges caution.He warns despite the widespread use of the molecule in sprays and gels in Chelyabinsk, far more vigorous testing is required before anyone is able to make claims about either its efficacy, or safety.Cherenkov says: \"For Acegram to become a certified medicine is a serious thing because it affects internal organs. It should be going through trials for another for ten to fifteen years: being tested on at least four different animal species, (looking at the) affect on various systems within the body: nervous, endocrine, hemopoiesis as well as (the potential) toxic and allergic effects of it. The allergic effect, by the way, will only show in a year or two. So at least 2 years (of further testing is needed).\"Cherenkov admits Acegram's apparent ability to tackle bacteria and viruses make it particularly attractive for further study.He says: \"What is unusual (about Acegram) is that along with other characteristics it has a microbicidal effect as well, meaning it slows down the growth of microbes and viruses, that became clear after the latest research. Such characteristics are rarely met together, usually if a medicine stimulates growth of something it works that way on everything, there is very few cases similar to Acegram.\"Zurochka has already patented the compound as an antibacterial agent.He says he's keen to exploit this feature of the compound because of the global problem where existing antibiotics are no longer effective against bacterial infections.According to Zurochka: \"It (Acegram) blocks not only multiplying of the virus inside the cell, but also prevents the intrusion of the virus (to the cell). The mechanism, this phenomenon we only discovered 3-4 months (ago), although we'd seen (the effect) in clinic before.\"On his mobile phone Dmitriy Koshmin shows a picture of the injury he says he sustained on his knee when he was riding a longboard a year ago. Kosmin claims following his doctor's advice he used the gel and his wound began to heal quickly.\"I woke up next morning (after having used Acegram), washed myself and saw that everything has closed there (the wound). I was impressed\" To produce the Acegram in pills as a medicine the scientists need to research the long term clinical effects. They need to find funding for the complicated and expensive process of the medical certification in Russia and the pharmaceutical distribution of the drug.
