The one who should bear responsibility is the one who packed the dates in the boxes and filled them,\" says Youssef Zamazam.Dates are very popular during Ramadan and the Prophet's tradition is to break the day long fast with this dry fruit. Morocco is a big dates producer, but it does not produce enough to satisfy the national demand. The country imports large quantities from neighbouring Algeria and Tunisia but also from the Middle East and the Gulf. In recent years, Israeli dates found their way to the Moroccan consumers, many of whom were not even aware of their country of origin. But this year, things have changed. In May, the Moroccan BDS movement launched a vigorous campaign among wholesalers in Casablanca, Mohammedia and Sale that called on them not to trade in Israeli dates, even if there are no official trade links between Morocco and Israel. BDS Morocco is not the only movement asking for the boycott of Israeli dates. Many NGOs and trade unions are joining in the campaign, among them the National Working Group for Palestine and the National Federation of the Agriculture Sector affiliated to the Moroccan Trade Union, the largest trade union in the country. Both organisations wrote to the Justice, Interior and Agriculture ministers to ask them to take action against the smuggling of Israeli dates into Morocco.Khalid Sefiani of the National Working Group for Palestine highlights three reasons why dealing in Israeli dates should be outlawed.\"The first one is that they come from a Zionist, racist and occupying entity that is using all its revenues in things we all know. The second one is that it is falsifying the country of origin because they write on the boxes that they originate from South Africa or Jordan, which is a falsification. The third one is that it is a genetically modified matter, harmful for health.\"According to the Moroccan BDS movement, most of the Israeli dates are smuggled illegally from Ceuta and Melilla, the Spanish enclaves in North Morocco. They are not sold openly as Israeli dates but in boxes bearing the names of South Africa and Jordan. \"We ask the ministry to forbid its importation and to make sure that these products are not smuggled in various ways.
