Wide of sunsetLEADIN:Long known as a favourite backpacker destination, Cambodia is upgrading its tourism sector with a string of new five-star resorts. Three high-end resorts near Siem Reap are helping redefine tourism in the kingdom. STORYLINE:This was scrub wasteland just three years ago before work began creating the Sala Lodges.Just eight kilometres (five miles) from Angkor Wat, the concept was to recreate \"an idyllic Cambodian village\" but with five-star facilities. The Swiss owners rolled out the grass lawns and transplanted mature trees to create the lush tropical gardens.Dating from the 1950s and 60s, the 11 traditional houses were sourced from the countryside around Siem Reap before being dismantled, transported and reassembled on site.Traditional timber houses in Cambodia are frequently knocked down in favour of bricks and mortar but these have been preserved for posterity.While the houses' exteriors have been faithfully preserved, the interiors have been transformed with local artisanal touches adding texture and colour to the aged timber. \"Sala Lodge, why Sala Lodge?\" asks French visitor Techen Ferracci. \"Because since I arrived here I had the feeling I'm in a village and I love the feeling of being in a real village but with fantastic customer service too. And by staying here you don't just visit the temples and go back and stay in a walled-off compound.\"      Opened just this year, Templation is the latest addition to Cambodia's growing portfolio of high-end resorts that are driving tourism in the kingdom in a more high-end direction. Inspired by water and flora, the resort is centred around Siem Reap's largest swimming pool - 1,000 cubic metres (35,314 cubic feet) - which is overlooked by a vast restaurant and bar terrace.\"Templation really illustrates the growing move to a more high-end market where we have 33 rooms on a single two-hectare property,\" says owner Alexis de Suremain. \"We have put a lot of water elements into the hotel with a massive central pool but also with 21 individual swimming pools which are attached to the rooms which really illustrates the pushing up of the tourism market in Cambodia - which is true not only in Siem Reap but also in Sihanoukville, in Phnom Penh, in Battambang and in general the tourism sector is improving across the entire country.\"As well as privacy, the villa pools allow for a more shaded dip than the main pool and a built-in jacuzzi promises relief for tired muscles after a long day exploring the nearby temples.The sizes of the villas differ somewhat but the style remains the same throughout the resort and the bathrooms are open-air offering guests a truly fresh start to the day. \"All the landscaping is amazing and the overall design is just, just perfect,\" says Patrick Currey from Los Angeles, USA. \"The pool is, has been so relaxing. So I feel really lucky to have discovered such a wonderful place in Cambodia.\"The resort is all-inclusive with shops, a gym and a business centre that is open 24 hours. Fifteen minutes from Siem Reap at the end of a rutted dirt track, 45-villa Phum Baitang was designed by the Paris-based AW2 to mimic a typical Cambodian village. Wooden thatched houses on stilts – costing around 250 US dollars per night - are dotted across the swaths of lemongrass and rice fields that give it its name, which translates as \"Green Village\".
