Wide of poster of Jordan's King Abdullah II and his predecessorsLEADIN:Young people in Jordan are facing an unemployment crisis.Around 35 percent of the country's youth do not have jobs, a problem made worse by a slowing economy and an influx of Syrian refugees to the labour market.STORYLINE:Sitting at home with nothing to do.Sabri Mashaaleh and his friends do not have jobs.Mashaaleh studied counselling with the expectation of work in the civil service - a previously common career path for university-educated Jordanians.But four years after completing the qualification, he is still unemployed.Young men here in Dhiban staged daily protests in the town's main plaza to demand jobs, though troops have now removed the tent where they held the two-month long demonstration.But their frustrations remain.\"Dhiban has become a fertile environment for radical thoughts, and it's a fertile environment for drug problems, and a fertile environment for criminals, and the reason behind all three things is unemployment and poverty,\" says Mashaaleh.\"If they don't develop Dhiban, these communities, Dhiban among them, will collapse; the security system will collapse as well in Dhiban and in the country in general,\" he adds.Dhiban is an area with one of the highest levels of unemployment in Jordan.But the Kingdom, like much of the Middle East, faces this problem country-wide.Unemployment rose from 13 percent in 2015 to 14.7 percent this year, and the young are hardest hit. In the 18-24 age bracket, 35 percent do not have jobs, according to the World Bank.Dibhan's mayor, Fhaid al-Rawahneh, says the town should be turned into a \"development area\" to create new jobs and wants more \"projects from investors\".But the situation is exacerbated by an economic slowdown.Growth has dropped from 3.1 percent in 2014, to 2.4 last year and hit just 2.3 percent in the first quarter of 2016.So Jordan has a big challenge to get more of its young people into work.\"We cannot tell these people that they have to wait a few more years. We have to tell them that they will have jobs now, but they need to be reasonable in terms of their expectations as to what these jobs are,\" says Omar Razzaz, Chairman of the Jordan Strategy Forum, Chairman of the National Employment Strategy Team.\"We cannot afford to have the unemployment problem turn into a radicalisation problem, that's the time bomb that we are facing.\"Imad Fakhouri, Jordan's planning minister, says lowering unemployment is the government's top priority. He's encouraging people to seek employment in the private sector rather than look for public sector jobs.And the government has set up a 35 million US dollar fund to encourage young Jordanians to set up small businesses.\"We have launched several initiatives, what we call self-employment initiatives, initiatives to assist youths and specially also gender, women youth, to access very cheap grants and financing or loans, without even providing any collateral, to start up small micro projects.\"But Jordan must also cope with the influx of Syrians which has further expanded the labour force.The country hosts around 660,000 registered refugees, though a recent census counted twice as many have made their home here.Initially, Syrians were barred from working legally to protect work for Jordanians and tens of thousands instead worked informally in the construction, farming and retail sectors.Earlier this year, Jordan changed course.The kingdom agreed to issue work permits to tens of thousands of Syrians. In exchange, Europe eased trade restrictions to encourage investment in Jordan, while donors, including the World Bank, promised financing and grants for development and labour-intensive projects in
