Various of troupe members making puppetsLEADINA group of young people are trying to address social evils in Egyptian society by way of puppet shows.The Pergola Puppet theatre aims to raise awareness of issues including sexual harassment and child abuse.STORYLINEYoung members of the Pergola Puppet theatre are performing their sketch \"It is unacceptable\" at a youth centre in an impoverished neighbourhood of Cairo. The interactive puppet show sheds light on sexual harassment and ways to deal with it.Founded in 2011, Pergola addresses social malaise with puppets. The group's previous plays and shows highlighted the plight of street children as well as domestic violence against women. \"I believe the Pergola theatre plays a great role in raising awareness,\" says Wael Yosry, one of the group's 15 members.Besides musical plays, Pergola also stages interactive theatre during which they seek to raise awareness of legal issues among viewers. For example in \"It is unacceptable\", the troupe explains the law on sexual harassment. They invite the audience to get involved and to change the story's denouement by taking proactive steps to stop the \"harasser\". \"We start by setting the scene with a young girl who is getting sexually harassed on the street and then someone from the audience comes up to the stage and takes part in the show to change the turn of events in a positive way,\" explains Alaa Mahmoud, the group's 22-year-old acting director. The group believes their message can appeal to both children and adults.Soha Saad, a 24-year-old kindergarten teacher, is one of the troupe members.\"We discuss issues that are beyond children. Society believes that any serious issue is beyond children but if you read child psychology, we will find out that children can understand any issue depending on the way you communicate it to them.\"The troupe has staged several shows on the street asking viewers to interact in their plays.
