Drought in the region is decreasing the amount of grazing land available for goats and camels - forcing families to be constantly on the move to feed their animals. The Mediterranean Levant region is experiencing the worst drought in 900 years according to research published by NASA earlier this year.STORY-LINE: It's sunrise in the central Anatolian countryside near Kazim Karabekir - and it's time for Hasan Bacak and his family to get back on the road. Every spring Bacak, his wife Emine and their 18 month old son Mehmet migrate from southern Turkey in search of higher grounds on the plateaus of Central Anatolia. They are Sarikecili - translated locally as 'yellow people with goats' and they are part of  one of the oldest pastoral nomadic groups in the region.  The nomads migrate yearly from the Mediterranean coast to the Anatolian mountains with their goat herds, following the colder weather. Temperatures are too high for the goats on the coast in summertime. \"I get up in the morning, to migrate I tidy everything up, all my stuff, my tea, my food, my material, goat's material. I put everything on the camels, I break the tent, I put them on my camels I continue the road,\" says Bacak. While Bacak prepares the camels, his wife is already on her way with the goats, following a terrain trail.\"She (Emine Bacak, his wife) drives the goats, I tidy the house (the tent) up. Who else will chase the goats? Goats and camels won't walk together. She drives the goats. We live like that. In a nomad's life, women drive the goats. Goat goes through there (the mountains) camel goes down,\" says Bacak. The route they travel is ancient - used by their forefathers for centuries. \"This is our path we have been chasing since history. This road is our heirloom, from our fathers, mothers, midwifes, grandfathers. We did not make this road up. Since Turkey's foundation, this historical road is a nomad road,\" says Bacak. But the environment on the route is changing, causing problems for Bacak and his family. Turkey, and Central Anatolia in particular is experiencing very dry weather conditions. The summers here are dry and hot, while the winters are warm and rainy. Although winter rain has replaced snow in recent years, the amount of rain has been decreasing and it's affecting plant life and grazing land. Bacak says the vegetation used to be knee high - now it is below ankle level. \"Every year here, the length of the herb used to be like that (points to his knees). This year it's not. It's dry. Because there is no rain. If there had been rain, there would have been herbs here this year. We would have stayed three days here. The herb would have been good, there would have been water. It would have been good. But now there is no rain, before there used to be snow here, we used to eat snow. Now, there is no snow for two years. Because there is no rain.\" Years ago the trail was easier as the family managed to camp longer and didn't have to migrate almost every day. But Bacak says he listens to his animals. No grazing land means they have to move on. \"Yes, we were more comfortable before. I remember that we used to stay here for a week. But now, I arrived yesterday, I am leaving today. There is no green, the cattle (meaning goats and camels) don't stop.\"  And so he packs his camels again in search for a better spot for his goats to graze. Ayse Hilal Tuztas, an anthropologist at Yeditepe University in Istanbul has carried out extensive research on the Sarakecili nomads.\"The migration completely depends on the weather. When the temperature rises in April, the goats become unable to stay in Mersin (southern Turkey), that's why the migration starts. They have to stopover during the trip because the rain might effect them, especially the families migrating with their camels,\" she explains. Sarikecili bake their own bread and make their own goats cheese. They buy vegetables and water when they pass through villages, but they also get water from other nomad families. Some families trail with tractors and water tanks. Tuztas estimates there are around 150 families - approximately 800 to 1000 people - left in Turkey who still live this traditional lifestyle. Tuztas says the prolonged drought is not at a stage yet where it is threatening the existence of the nomads, but it is having an effect on their lifestyle, since their goats need water and high grass.  \"The life depends on water and rain. All of these developments, at the same time, climate change is affecting the precipitation negatively.  And of course, this negative affect is also affecting the continuation of the nomad life.\"Research by NASA published earlier this year shows the Mediterranean Levant region, including southern Turkey experienced the worst drought in 900 years between 1998 and 2012. The Mediterranean Levant includes Cyprus, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria, and Turkey. Opinions on when or whether these conditions will change vary widely.  According to the department of meteorology engineering at Istanbul Technical University, varying predictions are set over the next 20-30 years.
