As its name suggests, it takes place once every two years.This year, the festival has been curated by New York-based art collective DIS, known for switching between fashion, design, advertising, commercialism and art - often within a heartbeat.One installation on show is \"Number 3\" by Shawn Maximo. It's essentially a restroom, complete with a functioning toilet, a sink and - confusingly - beanbags.\"I'm trained as an architect and toilets are always the last space to be considered, and they're often designed by the most junior design team member,\" says Maximo.\"And I always think that the bathroom is really a missed opportunity for design and experience. And I take that as a challenge, I guess, to try to reinvent how we consider these spaces and what we do in them, and how we also perceive ourselves in these spaces.\"The restroom is set to be open for use throughout the festival, but not only for the toilet. Maximo envisages it as a place to \"hang out.\"\"For me, I think art and design are very much entwined. Especially in today's economies of art presentations,\" says Maximo.\"I am trained as an architect and a designer, but I guess I feel that I produce art work, to be shown in art institutions. I don't think the distinction is so important, personally. Considering that I don't sell anything. \"So, I feel like if I was a designer and I was selling tons of furniture I might feel like I was more of a designer. But I think that the two worlds are so pourous and kind of cross-fertilising, that I think it's ever more difficult to distinguish between them. And I actually think that the distinction is not so relevant.\"The art festival is mostly taking place at two venues; the Kunst-Werke exhibition space and the Akademie der Kunste (Academy of Art) in central Berlin.Rohan Whiteley is a fashion designer from Melbourne, Australia and is showing a range of skirts in an installation.\"More and more contemporary art is paying attention to the fashion industry,\" he says.\"And I think the boundaries between those industries are blurring a little bit. And essentially, historically, those industries have been quite similar for a number of decades now. \"I think, perhaps, it's just internally the way that people operating within those industries think about the industries themselves.\"The festival first took place in 1998, inspired by the Venice Biennale.Each festival is curated by a different artist or artist collective.London-based Christopher Thomas normally works with photography and sculptures.But for the Berlin Biennale he's showing a start-up concept - hovering somewhere between economics, politics and perhaps art.\"This is a long-term artwork, in the form of a startup called 'New Eelam', which is a company that my colleagues and I are founding.
