Joel McHale hosted the gala spoke highly of Bowie before going inside.\"You hear a lot cultural icon, but I don't think people appreciate when he would change everybody would change. When you go from 'Ziggy Stardust' to 'Let's Dance,' it's - everyone goes, 'That's what we're doing next,\" McHale said.But he also mentioned another recording artist that left us too soon, one that his parents would not allow him to see perform.\"Well, obviously 'Purple Rain' changed the world and my parents would not let me go to that concert because it was dirty. They didn't want to see a lap dance, they didn't want me to see that. So they wouldn't let me go and I had tickets for the purple section, so it's been hard,\" McHale said.McHale remembers a quote he heard from another rock icon about Prince.\"The great quote by Eric Clapton where he was asked what does it feel like to be the best guitar player in the world, and he said, 'I don't know, ask Prince. And I was like, yep, that sums up A, the level of talent. His style was amazing,\" McHale said.Tilda Swinton and Michael C. Hall performed a tribute to Bowie, while Jennifer Hudson honored Prince. On her way Swinton spoke briefly of being a part of the tribute. \"It's a pleasure and an honor,\" Swinton said.Besides Hall and Swinton, the star-studded red carpet saw the likes of Olivia Wilde, America Ferrera, Claire Danes, Ciara, and of course, lots of fashion designers. All spoke highly of the evening's posthumous honoree.Designer Diane von Furstenberg had this to say. \"David Bowie was an influence on everything. He was a cultural event. His music, everything he was, and we miss him,\" von Furstenberg said.Tommy Hilfiger reflected on Bowie constantly reinventing himself.\"He became a fashion icon all the way along because he was very chameleon-like and changed his look and changed his dress and his whole persona many, many times over his long history,\" Hilfiger said. Donna Karan was one of the evening's honorees and she summed up Bowie's contribution to style and fashion.\"He was fashion. That was pure fashion. To me fashion is your personal style. It's not a designer telling you what to wear.
