They come with a priest, they sleep here in the cathedral in sleeping bags, they prepare their food here, every morning at 7:30 or 8 they have a Mass and then they start working.\"21. And after seeing the information on the website we decided to come here and help. We'd like to help the old man finish his project as soon as possible.\"24. Various of Don Justo, sitting and contemplatingLEADIN : It may not be La Mancha but the quest is Quixotic. An elderly Spanish gentleman is creating a cathedral almost entirely by himself. STORYLINE:This ornate bascilia dominates the small town of Mejorada del Campo, on the outskirts of the Spanish capital Madrid. It is still unfinished and like its counterpart in Barcelona La Sagrada Familia, it receives a lot of visitors. Its architect is surprising, as he is also the project manager, bricklayer, sculptor and artist. But he has no formal architecture or construction training.Justo Gallego Martinez, known as Don Justo, began the project in 1961 when he was just 36, he is now 91 years old.The sheer size of the unfinished cathedral suggests that the structure has been built by a team of architects, but Martinez has spent more than 50 years of his life on the colossal project, building the church almost single-handedly for most of that time using recycled materials. Don Justo is a former Trappist monk who embarked on an epic journey to build the cathedral with his bare hands, as an act of faith.Born to a devout Catholic mother in 1925 Martinez joined a Trappist order to become a priest but he contracted tuberculosis just before taking his vows and in order to stop the contagious disease, he was dismissed from the monastery.Heart-broken by the monastery's decision, he instead dedicated his life, inheritance and all his possessions to build the cathedral.\"It (the project) started when I was already an adult but I always loved the church. Day after day, Martinez walked around the small town of Mejorada del Campo, collecting recycled material, empty oil drums, scrap metal, broken pieces of coloured glasses and broken bricks from a local factory.Locals ridiculed him and believed he was a madman, but once the structure stood up, Martinez earned the respect of his neighbours and nearby towns. \"Yes, I was on my own (in building this), but I've had four nephews (who have helped). I've had the help of the schoolchildren. I've built this wall with (the help of) the schoolchildren. But directing the project was done by me. I've worked at nights on my own. There is no project (without me). I've done this. It's (based on) my thoughts. This is the truth. But I've always had help, though I have worked on my own as well. Of course, a lot. And at nights on my own, thinking how to do this project,\" he says. The building, partly modelled on St Peter's Basilica in the Vatican, is almost 40 metres tall (131 ft) and has several different minor chapels, cloisters and a crypt beneath the main building.The structure of the unfinished dome of the cathedral  - which took nearly 30 years to erect  - was built from food containers made from thick plastic tubs, previously used for fridge storage and microwave heating, so they have actually survived the weather. The building has no construction permission from the government, but so far the authorities have looked the other way. Don Justo has sold his fathers' lands to finance the project and the land on which the cathedral is being built is his inheritance.He says he has bequeathed the building to the local diocese, but his assistant admits that the project does not have the official blessing of the Catholic church.Martinez describes his masterpiece as a \"Quixotic\" quest.\"What people see here deceives them...Do you know El Quixote? In 2005, Don Justo was featured in a TV advertisement for an energy drink and that turned the spotlight on his cathedral.Tourists from across the country and abroad came to visit and donations became a huge part of his project.Rodrigo Bobroff is visiting from Alicante with his family. \"We are surprised by the man and the amount of work he has done on his own and without help during many years, building this cathedral which is spectacular.\"What inspired Justo, motivated several volunteers who have helped him throughout all these years.Among those who visited occasionally to give a hand, Angel Lopez Sanchez is an exception.He visited Martinez  more than 20 years ago, but since then he has stood by the old monk, helping him with the unfinished project. He has left his job and is dedicating his life to the project as a devotional act. \"I came once to see him and I liked what he was doing. I saw him up there doing things and asked him if he needed help, he said \"well, ok yes\". And that's how I started helping him, coming every now and then, mainly during the weekends because I had my own job and we went on like this for many years and now it's been many years that I haven't left this place (to do another job).  The two of us are here the whole day.\" Young people from across the world also volunteer their time to the project adds Lopez Sanchez. \"Many (students) come, mainly Germans. She has come to help out for the day after seeing the story on social media. \"We saw this story in China, on Weibo (China's equivalent of Twitter). And after seeing the information on the website we decided to come here and help. We'd like to help the old man finish his project as soon as possible.\"Don Justo says he spends much of the day, meditating and praying to receive guidance and inspiration from God to finish his grand project.He receives donations from local brick factories of low quality cement and bricks. He also is given small donations from private individuals, the lack of funds is part of the reason the project has taken so long.
