The Lykoi or werewolf cat is only one of 35 known in the world and is the only natural-born Lykoi on record in South Africa. STORY-LINE: Meet Eyona.. the wolf-cat.....the official name for this rare breed is Lykoi ( also spelt Lycoi ). Lycos means wolf in Greek and as the cats are often thought to have the appearance of a werewolf, the name Lycoi came about.Mandy Store works with the animal rescue shelter, Tears. \"A Lykoi cat is a genetic mutation of a domestic cat, and basically it is a domestic cat that has very similar features to the look of a wolf, the characteristics of a dog and the physique of a cat. This breed is called the second chance breed in the States (United States) where it was originally founded by a vet called Dr Gobble. Now Dr. Gobble has most of the natural born Lykois in the world of which he has done genetic research on the breed to investigate what the breed is about,\" she explains. Their appearance is caused by a natural mutation in feral cats. They were first documented about twenty years ago and US vet and Lykoi specialist, Johnny Gobble started a breeding programme in 2010, alongside another Lykoi owner. DNA testing was carried out at University of California Davis to confirm that the cats were not of the Spynhx/Devon breed gene, and Gobble tested them to ensure they had no diseases or disorders that was causing them to shed their hair. Eyona's story started under a bush in a Cape Town park.Local resident Colin Booysen, who feeds the city's feral cats on a daily basis, found the litter about two months ago. Most kittens will chase a ball on a string, but Booysen noticed that one little moggy was different...very different. \"The Lykoi will sit with the mother all the time, she will never go…like the kittens will run around and play, chase tails, hop over bushes, but the Lykoi would sit with her mother like a dog, she would sit against her shoulder and look up at her mother, and just sit there and do nothing but be affectionate towards her mother, and watch the other cats as if they were something else not her... but she is a kitten. So I felt that that was very strange, and she looked different, she was was shedding hair, she had these bat like ears and she had these beautiful big adorable eyes, you had to love them, so I said you look guys you have to come and check this out because it could be good or bad because I don't know these guy, I'd not seem him before, and now it is like so rare, no wonder I have not seen a thing like that before,\" he explains. After the disappearance of the litter's mother, the kittens were taken to Tears for sterilisation.Store takes up the story. \"So about the age about four or five weeks, we trapped the kittens and we brought them into Tears, when that litter arrived their was six kittens, of which five were short hair domestic kittens and then there was this one little boy who looked like a little monkey and he was Eyona. He had lots of hair but lots of fur patches and losses around his eyes and different areas around his body. We weren't sure if there was something wrong with him so we decided to keep him back and do further tests, because we would never want to put a feral kitty back into its environment if it is sick or compromised,\" she says. Tears is one of the leading shelters for cats and dogs in the Western Cape . One of its biggest projects is the feral project which consists of 11 teams working around the clock 7 days a week. Feral cats are trapped and sterilised, checked for any other problems and nursed back to health, before being released. Since monitoring of the Lykoi breed began in 2011, there have been only 34 reported natural mutations from around the world with the one found by TEARS being the 35th Lykoi in the world. Gobble has confirmed that Eyona is indeed a Lykoi, says Store. Lykoi cats have been recognised by the International Cat Association (TICA) as an 'advanced new breed'. Their unusual coats are a mix of black and white hair, a combination called roan in other animals. The amount of hair varies, but the cat's face is often hairless, according to the TICA website. Eyona will stay in the safe care of Tears Animal Rescue and will not be rehomed.
