It tops the list of most polluted cities in the Kingdom, closely followed by Marrakech and Tangier, based on the concentration of small particulate levels (PM10) and fine particles (PM2.5).According to the latest survey by the World Health Organisation, it has a high concentration ratio of small particles - 61 grammes per cubic metre, the normal being 20 grammes per cubic metre.Casablanca Environment activists say the symbolic car-free day can draw the attention of city residents to the serious illnesses attributed to poor air quality.\"Chronic troubles are frequent and serious. They range from manifesting themselves as a dry cough, problems of the respiratory system and lack of breath following an effort. There are also some more serious consequences such as asthma, respiratory allergies or cancer,\" says Dr. Abdelwahab Kairaouani, an expert in allergies and respiratory diseases.Casablanca residents have mostly welcomed the initiative, with some even calling for more green spaces in the city, to encourage healthy activities like jogging and walking.Morocco is preparing to host the Climate World Summit COP 22 in Marrakech in November this year.
