The alpine horn has been an essential part of everyday communication between the mountain villages since ancient times. STORY-LINE: The village of Bukovets in the Carpathian mountains, Ukraine. For the Hutsuls ethnic group that live in these mountains this huge pipe was used like a telephone -  to send messages from one village to another. It was also widely used by shepherds to guide their cattle and dogs through the mountain paths. Each message had its own harmony – so villagers knew whether they were hearing a wedding invitation or being asked to pay their last respects to a deceased relative. Tafiychuk made his first trembita 60 years ago when he was only 20. Since then, making musical instruments has become his main job and a hobby.  It is very important ritual for Tafiychuk to find the right pine for making a trembita in the woods. \"I can not explain why, but European pine is the best for it, it is much lighter.  And also when a person plays it picks up the moisture, when a person stops it dries.  Other wood rots quickly. European pine is much tougher,\" says Tafiychuk. The Trembitas are made from a tree branch, which is split into two to carve out the middle part and then put together again.  The pipe is then covered with a birch bark. It takes up to 10 days to complete a trembita. Trembitas can be up to 4 metres long.  \"Today very few know how to play on trembita and their interest is also minimal. In old times when means of communication were different a shepherd who was grazing cattle on a mountain would communicate with another shepherd through it. They used different melodies,\" says Tafiychuk.
