But what we found is that a lot of people have a hard time to get started with reading books at all, with all the noise happening. With all the social media, messaging. Like, people are distracted when they consume content on mobile devices. And a full book is just not competitive on such a mobile screen when people have short attention spans and try to read something short. What we are doing is that we distil the essence of non-fiction books. We distil some key insights from non-fiction books and put them in a format that is made for mobile reading.\"There are over 1500 books in the Blinkist library, all non fiction. The company does not plan to release any fiction books, they are not suited to be condensed says Seim. Many are self-help and business books, but there are also biographies. One particularly successful section is books that focus on parenting - perhaps a sign that new parents have even less time than other people. But does the service not just add to a dumbing down of the modern society, where people stop reading books and just touch on topics in short information snippets? Not according to Seim:\"There are always people who have a negative take on things that technology does. Or, you can always see from two perspectives. What we see in reality, we usually say OK, lets look at the facts. And we run surveys among our customers frequently and we see that most of our users use Blinkist to discover new books that they can read in full. And to, you know, dip their toes in to topics that they find interesting, but not interesting enough to spend, to read a full book on that topic. So we see that we don't cannibalise the reading of full books, but rather expose people to more topics that they otherwise would not have discovered. And to more books. And give them a better way to, you know, decide what they should read next,\" he says. The \"Blinks\" are not authorised by the authors or the publishers. As they are fully re-written and never copied, they do not breach copyright law, according to Seim.So far there have been no lawsuits targeting Blinkist from authors or publishers.Ben Schuman-Stoler is one of the people that edits the Blinks that have been written by one of a team of authors - something that usually takes around one month. He says it is imperative to stay as true to the original ideas of the authors as possible.\"If you asked my mom what her favourite part of the Daniel Kahneman book Thinking, Fast and Slow, I can guarantee you it will be different from my favourite part. Likewise if you ask my friends that are psychologists. Or if you ask my friend who is a lawyer. Totally fair. Right.
