Circumcision procession walking through village of ManastiricaLEADIN:Muslim boys in a Kosovan village have been going through the religious rite of passage that is circumcision.The practice is common in Kosovo and the people of Manastirica have turned the event into a local festival.STORYLINE:The drumbeats herald an important day for the village boys.Thousands line the streets of Manastirica as the youngsters are carried towards a traditional religious ritual: circumcision.Many Kosovan Muslims opt for the procedure to be conducted on a hospital operating table.But in this mountain village, the ceremony is done the old-fashioned way - by a barber equipped with a straight razor.And the local people have turned this into a festival, with all the area's boys undergoing circumcision at the same event.Amid a few tears, another young Muslim endures the traditional procedure.It's been the same here for generations.\"I feel really good, everything happened as it should without any problems. I was circumcised the same way, the tradition goes on for years,\" says Behxhet Koliqi, the father of one circumcised boy.The festival is held every 5-10 years, depending on demand.\"This year we have 60 children that we need to circumcise,\" says Rakip Banovi, Head of the Circumcision Festival Organising Committee.The Muslim Slav community call themselves Bosniaks and trace their roots from close-by Bosnia.
