In the industrial city of Perm on the Western edge of the Ural mountains, female competitors are working to overcome the challenges and predjudice often seen in Russian society. STORY-LINE:Athletes brave Perm's freezing winter temperatures to train in one of the city's makeshift, outdoor rings. The city has a proud history of combat sports and boasts several Olympians, including Vassily Solomin - the Soviet lightweight boxer who won a bronze medal at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. But like in the West, combat sport in Russia is a male-dominated arena with the majority of both amateur and professional divisions made up of male competitors. The situation isn't helped by Russia's deeply patriarchal values and conservative views on gender roles. Despite this, Natalya Kamenskikh, a 31 year old world-class athlete, is making waves. Since her first fight she has climbed the ranks to become a European champion and a bronze medalist in the kickboxing world championships. \"My mother was first totally against my boxing because she saw bruises on my legs sometimes on the face. But when I got medals, when I won the Russian championship she started telling about that all her friends in the neighbourhood. She was happy and proud,\" she says.Asked why so few women participate in combat sports, she says it's a question of motherhood.\"If you keep fighting till you are 45 and participate in mixed martial arts competitions probably it will be hard to build a family afterwards, I mean for a woman. That's why so few women get involved\", she says.\"If I retire now I can have a family. Maybe I will think about having a baby. It's not too late in principle.\"Such considerations are a long way off for 10 year old Monika Zaynutdinova who trains in the same sports hall as Natalya. Her father, Mikhail, taught her how to box at a young age and she now trains almost everyday. However, she doesn't dream of becoming a professional boxer. In her eyes, she boxes so that she can defend her family and herself. \"There are many mean boys out there, even some girls are mean,\" she says.\"Boxing makes me feel strong and self-assured. I like it very much.\" Both women are just a handful of women in modern Russia who are challenging traditional roles and gender bias.
