Mid track left of Fraser pushing golf trolleyLEADIN:The historic sport of golf returns to the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro for the first time since 1904.Scotland is considered to be the home of golf and boasts the oldest courses and clubs in the world – So what do local golfers make of the sport's Olympic return?STORYLINE:The 17th tee at St Andrews Old Course is one of the most famous sights in the sport of golf.Even on a typically misty day by the North Sea, the sight is an evocative one and drives many thousands of golf fanatics from around the world to this course.St Andrews Links course professional Blair Cross is today tackling the changeable weather.A links course is typically coastal, played close to the sea and sand dunes. The word links comes from the old Gaelic word meaning 'ridge, or high ground'.The course for the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro is also a links course... although the sun is more assured in Brazil than here in Scotland.Cross has played countless rounds of golf at St Andrews but is well aware of the history of the venue and looks forward to the Olympics as a way of promoting the sport he loves.He says: \"St Andrews is the heart of golf and it is golf, the history of golf but also the innovation of golf. There is historic evidence to suggest golf has been played here for 600 years, making it one of the oldest golf courses in the world.Laurie Watson, media manager at St Andrews explains: \"St Andrews is the home of golf because it has probably the earliest documented evidence of golf being played anywhere. It's a bucket-list thing to come to St Andrews and tick that box and say you've played the world's most famous links.\"Scotland is awash with golfing history and although St Andrews can trace its history as a course back to the 15th Century, the claim to being the oldest golfing club is made by the Royal Burgess club in Edinburgh.Founded in 1735, the Royal Burgess sits in a suburb of the Scottish capital city.This club has an equally rich tradition and today club captain John Fraser is facing the challenge of this picturesque parkland course.\"So I mean the club house itself is full of history dating back from 1735 through the centuries. So the whole club house depicts our long and rich tradition, but the golf course itself is a unique parkland golf course with very testing par fours and a very fair test of golfers of all ability,\" he says.Burgess is a Royal golf club, and only nine others in Scotland can claim this accolade. An edict by King George V on 30 September 1929 approved the royal title.Royal membership continues to this day at the club and HRH the Duke of York has been an honorary member of the club since 1991.In recent years, the club has relaxed many of the rules that have seen golf accused of being stuffy and elitist.Fraser himself points out that no so long ago even himself, the club captain, would not have been able to stand in the bar without a jacket and tie.He wants to introduce more young members to the club to continue the Royal Burgess tradition for the next generation. Fraser thinks the Olympics will help to do this, and not just in Scotland but further abroad.\"I think the additional exposure that will get through the Olympics is bound to help golf and promote the game of golf particularly in countries perhaps where it's not yet established, because while we talk about Scotland and the game being very well established here with a long history we've got to remember that golf is new to certain countries.
