But a startup in Prague is breaking the mould - combining ancient techniques with new technology and inspiration from beyond the Czech Republic. The new approach is paying off. Lasvit Glass now sells spectacular pieces across the globe from London to Hong Kong, Dubai to Melbourne, and Chicago to Shanghai. STORY-LINE: What was established as a small start up with four employees in 2007, now employs 330 people. This is the Lasvit glass company and its revenue have been steadily growing, even through the global economic downturn.Lasvit founders' goal was to combine traditional Czech glass blowing techniques that date to the 12th century with the latest technology. They use the work of top contemporary designers, both at home and around the world. \"Lasvit follows the tradition of Czech glass making which is 800-years-old and what is unique about us is that we combine the glass making with design, unique technologies, craft and in some cases with art. And that's what I think is very specific about us,\" says Ales Styblo, Lasvit vice president. That strategy has paid off. The company has quickly turned into a global enterprise that has its luxurious glass chandeliers, light installations, glass collections and glass construction panels used worldwide. From its first deal for a Hong Kong hotel in 2007, the company says its revenue reached more than one billion Koruna (41.2 million USD) last year, and Lasvit is confident the growth will continue in the years to come.Among its top and most complicated light creations, Lasvit has delivered a 12 metric ton installation for the Etihad Towers in Abu Dhabi, made of thousands of handcrafted crystal and hand-blown glass components. Other major installations can be found in London, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Dubai, Melbourne, and Chicago. But there are hardly any in the Czech Republic as 97 percent of Lasvit's output goes to foreign markets.Glass artist Marek Effmert is working with a team of glass blowers and craftsmen. Perfectly spherical glass orbs and intricate sculptures are formed in the workshop. Steady hands are needed when working with the red hot glass. Effmert explains that while some things stay the same, it's an art which is constantly evolving. \"The business I think stays the same, the glass works have been running for centuries and the glass is made still the same way as it used to be back in the days. There are more young glass blowers who are capable of doing different things because they are more interested in finding new techniques and exploring the world a little bit and trying to find some other possibilities of doing glass in a different way than in just the Czech way and the nice thing is that can later on combine it.\"Lasvit has 17 designers, but it also collaborates with international artists. They're targeting South East Asia, the Middle East and increasingly the United States as key markets.\"In general we monitor the potential markets,\" says Styblo. \"Of course, today, the geopolitical situation changes every day, every month; from Russia, Ukraine to the Middle East. But you are right we can see a potential in the countries like Iran where the sanctions are being eased. And our colleagues from the Dubai office have been working intensively on the development of the Iranian market.\" Lasvit has 13 international offices, including in New York and Los Angeles and hopes to open in Sao Paolo to grow across Brazil and Latin America. It currently has three production facilities and is planning to open a new glassworks in northern Czech Republic, at the heart of the local glass industry. There, the mountains are rich in high quality sand for glass making.A big aim for years ahead is to open luxury retail stores in Prague, London, Paris, New York and Hong Kong.FOR CLEAN VERSION SEE STORY NUMBER: 4029124LEAD IN:Glass making has been a traditional industry for the Czechs for centuries and a source of pride.
