However they need special attention in order to be healthy and productive. One of the hardest jobs is trimming the thorny branches and leaves. Not many are willing to risk climbing up these tall plants; this man is one of few that make a living from this activity. Aided by a rope, made of the fibrous bark of date palms, he climbs up to cut off unwanted branches. This helps in pollinating the female plant to bear more fruit. As with everything on the date palm, the thorny branches are not discarded. As date palm surgeon Abdel Hadi Abu Yassin explains: \"The thorns are used, the bark, the leaves and the branches. Everything is useful with this plant.\"On the side of a road in Luxor's West Bank Ahmed Abdeen Abd El Mobdy keeps his workshop. He works exclusively with date palm materials to make furniture. The craft was once very popular throughout Egypt. Abd El Mobdy learned the craft from his father who originally made baskets to carry vegetables. Today he is one of the few remaining craftsmen in Luxor to continue this trade. Sitting under a tree outside his workshop, in view of passers by heading towards the temples and tombs of the West Bank, Modby transforms the date palm branches into various types of furniture.\"Anything can be done with date palm branches. Chairs, tables, cupboards. Any designs,\" says Abd El Mobdy. Today he is making one of his new creations; a foldable chair. Inside his workshop, other craftsmen are cutting date palm branches with machete like tools, preparing to make bedframes and sofa frames. Other tools made of metal are used to puncture the branches in order to fit bits of frame together.\"Most of my clients are foreigners. Some of them leave for holidays but when they come back they always come and buy more from here,\" Says Abd El Mobdy. He adds that foreigners like his handicrafts but Egyptians rarely buy from him.One of his customers, Linda, an English expat, is very fond of Abd El Mobdy's work. She says, \"The economy at the moment is in a very poor condition because of course the main part of the economy, tourism, has almost collapsed. So anywhere where I can in a little way help the local economy to keep jobs for the local people.\" She adds that Abd El Mobdy is very flexible and will design furniture to meet clients' demands. The Marsam Hotel, the oldest guesthouse in the West Bank, is one of Abd El Mobdy main clients. German Manager Klaus Knuttgen has lived in Luxor for twenty-five years and has witnessed this trade disappear gradually. His hotel is made of mud bricks and most of his furniture is made of date palm branches, to keep a traditional atmosphere.\"The normal Egyptian population don't use these things anymore because they follow now the mainstream to have plastic things from China, the plastic chairs,\" says Knuttgen. All the rooms in the hotel are furnished with date palm, from cupboards to bed frames. However Knuttgen adds that he must renew his furniture every two to three years. However he says it's an investment he is willing to make out of love for this trade. He estimates his budget for this at 3000 (USD $337) Egyptian pounds a year. Knuttgen has also made some changes to the furniture to make it last longer like varnishing to avoid splinters. Termites sometimes feed on the sweet-tasting branches and damage the furniture. At a roadside cafe on the West Bank, the furniture is a mix of plastic chairs and date palm tables. The owner, Hassaan El Hassany says: \"We used to use date palm furniture but it would break quickly, especially the chairs. But the plastic chairs live a little longer and don't break like the others.\"He adds that he still uses tables made from date palms because they resist longer. Another benefit of plastic chairs is that they can be stacked. Abd El Mobdy demonstrates his finalised foldable chair. He hopes this kind of chair will be popular amongst local cafes. He says he can't see a future for this trade he learned from his father. His own descendants are not interested in following up on it. \"They (people) go for any other kind of trade except this one. They want to make money and this trade does not make a lot of money.\"Ironically, he is one of few people in Luxor that is still working and earning. However without the input of the expat community Abd El Mobdy would also find himself out of work. Pictures on a wall in his workshop show all the designs he has made. The University of Basel in Switzerland will hold an exchange workshop in Luxor next September where students will learn about this industry. It's hoped this event will help generate more foreign interest in the date palm craft.FOR CLEAN VERSION SEE STORY NUMBER: 4031525LEAD IN:The Egyptian craft of making furniture from date palms is in decline as more and more local people opt for plastic items.Small numbers of expats and foreign tourists are now being relied on to keep this industry, and the struggling local economy, afloat.STORY-LINE:Date palms grow in abundance all along the Nile in Egypt, providing healthy fruits and useful materials for crafts.
