The 50 year-old actress attended the opening ceremony Wednesday (11 May 2016) wearing a Roberto Cavalli pink lace gown, with a sleeve design that pays homage to her heritage.  Speaking after the event, the \"Memoirs of a Geisha\" star explained that she worked in collaboration with the Italian designer to achieve her look:\"I'm Chinese, so I would like to have a little bit of Chinese element to (the dress),\" she said.\"(Cavalli) designed a beautiful sleeve that opened up like a fan. The sleeves are like a Chinese fan. I thought it looked great, so we went with that. It was appropriate, simple, and suitable etiquette for the red carpet,\" she added with a smile. Normally in attendance on film promotional duties, this time Gong Li is in Cannes as an ambassador for L'Oreal - alongside other A-listers including Julianne Moore, Cheryl Cole and Blake Lively. While she's happy to be back in Cannes, Gong admits that she couldn't help but to feel disappointed at the absence of Chinese films at the festival this year. Not a single Chinese film is showing in competition, out of competition, or selected for any other category in the festival.  She gave her opinion as to why she thinks this is:\"A lot of problems have arisen within the (film) industry. The box office, the numbers, real or fake, you don't really know, but of course this is about money. However, forging (box office results) is a terrible influence on culture and entertainment,\" she said. \"I think we need to, starting with the scripts, starting with guidance from journalists, starting with the filmmakers, we need to tell everyone that a movie is not merely for entertainment. It might leave you with something much deeper for your soul. It's not just for laughs, not just for jokes. It's more than that. Right now there's not a lot of people talking about that in China right now, and not a lot of guidance given. However, guidance is very important.\"Gong Li also mused on an issue currently prevalent in Hollywood, \"white-washing.\" A recent example of this was the casting of Tilda Swinton as a role in \"Doctor Strange\" Ã¢Â€Â“ originally intended for a Tibetan male. Li said she didn't think that the issue was \"particularly important.\" She instead said she thought the Asian and US film markets hadn't \"meshed together.\" With close to three decades in the business, Gong has worked under the direction of Chinese director Zhang Yimou several times, in films like \"Ju Dou,\" \"Rise the Red Lantern\" and \"To Live\".  She achieved moderate success in Hollywood in the 2000s, appearing in \"Memoirs of a Geisha\" and \"Miami Vice\".  Gong Li also discussed the lack of strong female roles in Hollywood:\"I think generally speaking in Hollywood, US, or in European markets, (the films) are predominately based on male lead roles. There are a lot of male roles, but not a lot of female roles. There are a lot of great actresses in the US and there aren't enough roles for them. It's even hard for them to get a good female role, never mind a Chinese actress. How do you integrate that into the script? That's very hard. How do you mix a Chinese actor with a group of foreigners? It's not easy,\" she says.\"I've done \"Miami Vice\", \"Hannibal Rising\", \"Memoirs of a Geisha\".  Those are special circumstances. Take \"Miami Vice\" for example. The character wasn't Asian. The director changed it. The director said that he wanted to work together Gong Li, and I wanted to work with Michael Mann.
