Various Birkenau concentration campSTORYLINE:Pope Francis' advocacy for refugee rights faces a diplomatic test on Wednesday when he begins a five-day visit to Poland, where a populist government has slammed the door on most asylum-seekers.Francis is scheduled to meet Polish President Andrzej Duda in Krakow's millennium-old castle atop Wawel Hill where, in the neighbouring cathedral, Polish national heroes for centuries have been laid to rest. He then will hold a question-and-answer session with Poland's bishops behind closed doors.The pope suggests that reluctance or refusal to shelter newcomers in need conflicts with the parable of the Good Samaritan, who offered aid to a robbed and wounded stranger.One of the most prominent Polish church officials, Father Waldemar Cislo says that Poland is afraid of terrorism and therefore it does not want migrants from the Middle East in the country.Catholic figures in Poland have been widely seen to reinforce the government's nationalist views.Most of Poland's refugees come from Russia, Ukraine and other neighbours in the former Soviet Union, not from Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq or Africa, major sources for people trying to gain European Union protection. The right-wing Polish government elected in October has refused to observe an EU-wide agreement on sharing the burden of accommodating tens of thousands of asylum seekers largely stuck in Italy and Greece.Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz, Archbishop of Krakow, host for Pope Francis during this visit, says that Poland did enough for refugees by taking more than a (m) million people from Ukraine in 2015. Dziwisz claims that Polish people know very well how it feels to be a refugee because they have been refugees themselves in the past.Meanwhile, immigrants in an asylum centre east of Warsaw are not offended by the Polish attitude towards them. They understand the situation and patiently await resolution to their status in Poland.Still, Khaber Admi, a 27-year-old immigrant from Afghanistan is waiting for his asylum application to be granted. Admi is a geography teacher and intends to stay with his family in Poland. His application has been under consideration by the Polish authorities for two months now but he does not lose hope that even with all anti-immigration attitude, Poland will allow him and his family to stay.Francis is visiting Poland in connection with World Youth day and the Pontiff wants to make sure that all the young people arriving in Poland for the event visit the former Nazi death camps of Auschwitz and Birkenau.Anna Soldano, young Catholic from Spain walked through Birkenau concentration camp, one of the sites of Francis's pilgrimage to Poland. She said the Pope wanted to share the message of love and peace, and wanted the youth to see the horrific results of the Holocaust so it never happens again.Analysts see a wide gulf in Polish attitudes to Francis and to the only Polish pope, John Paul II, whom Francis canonized in 2014.
