STORY-LINE: Sprint canoeist John Schofield is putting some of the latest technology through its paces. He's using a force plate which measures the kinetic characteristics of an athlete's movement, detecting the differences produced on the left and the right leg.Like all sprinters, Schofield has to generate an explosion of power and use it as efficiently as possible. It's just one of the new pieces of equipment that coaches and athletes are relying on here at the UK's national sports centre.Schofield explains: \"So this here is a really good test of power, so explosive leg power and one of the ways we actually use that is in tracking fatigue so we can jump on this before a gym session and if the scores are down for neuro muscular power then we can alter the gym session accordingly and make sure athletes don't get into a state where they're over trained and aren't recovering and progressing well.\"Schofield and his canoeing partner won bronze in the London 2012 Olympic Games and they are hoping to better that in Rio this August.According to Schofield, the performance is only as good as the training. He says: \"We get up to a massively high wattage so we'll be talking a couple of thousand watts and then just trying to hold on to it in the last sort of ten seconds is really really tough. But the toughest part is all the training that goes in to getting you in that shape beforehand.\"Schofield is currently working with Alex Wolf who supervises all the strength and conditioning that goes on at the National Sports Centre in Bisham Abbey. Wolf and his colleagues prepare athletes in thirty nine different sports. They collaborate with specialists in medicine, physiology, psychology and engineering to assist athletes who want to build up endurance and stave off injury in this important time before the games. They say they're developing the mind set that will help them to win.Seasoned coaches like Wolf have watched as sports technology has become highly sophisticated. He says: \"In the old days it took us, if we went for 40 athletes in an assessment, that would take us 30 hours to go through all the data to find out what that information would be, if that's useful information. That's a week gone before you even get to be able to act upon that information. So suddenly now we can intervene almost within seconds of understanding that data and that's a power that we're probably a week ahead of where we used to being. And in the four year cycles, every week, every day counts.\" Elite athletes are sent here for rehab and recovery as well as performance. Here, the smallest of margins in improvement can make the difference in whether or not an athletes reaches the Olympic podium. For team sports like hockey, coaches are using GPS signalling to find out what each member of the team is doing and how they're performing.Emily Maguire was on the British team in 2012 and she's hoping her squad will make it to Brazil. Maguire has complete faith in her coaches and the devices they now wear to train. She says: \"They know exactly what it takes to perform in an international match, therefore they can make training replicate that, they know when we've had a bit of a lighter session, when we need to have a bit of a harder session, they know exactly what sort of intensity and effort is needed.\"Maguire's coach is Ben Rosenblatt a specialist in sports medicine. He says: \"International hockey is exceptionally competitive so at the top, anybody could turn up and win the Olympics. So it really is a matter of who's best prepared in order to go deliver, go deliver come the games time. So us having the GPS technology means that we can have a much better understanding of the demands that are going to be placed on the players during competition and then it really means we can individualise the training programs for the athletes.\"In the hydro pool, a twist of a knob increases the water pressure. Many more gadgets are already being considered according to coach Danny Kerry. He says: \"There's some coaches looking into using drones and combining sort of GPS data with drone technology to understand where players are in space and time and mapping that out. Potentially you could see the development of patches to measure the physiological data in real time, you see that with the formula one drivers, people in the space station so that might become more prevalent over the next few years.\"Space age technology might be used in the next Olympic games, but in the meantime the athletes are focussed on Rio.No matter how sophisticated the technology is here, it is always how the competitors perform on the day that will decide who wins the medals.LEAD IN: With the Olympics looming, national teams across the world are using new technologies to ensure their athletes have the edge over their competitors.Sports scientists say preparation is vital and the focus is now on increasing strength and endurance as well as technical accuracy.
