To make sure that patients understand the concepts, that they're prepared to commit to it. That they are reliable, they will take their medications, they will go through the programme, they'll rehabilitate the way they need to do. So that is very important. And then of course the psychological impact of having hands, or not having hands is very great, because like the face, they're on view all the time and you look at and judge hands for their beauty and what they're saying and how they communicate and what they do and what they tell you about the person. But not only do we have to match the hands immunologically in the same way that we have to match the kidneys and livers. But they also have to look appropriate because the hands are on view the whole time and so in a way that makes the job of finding the correct donor even harder and there's a good reason why we're very keen that people bear this in mind when making a donation.\"12. Close of King's fingersSTORYLINE:The first person in the UK to have a double hand transplant said it's as if they \"were made to measure\" for him. While it's early days now, doctors expect 57-year-old Chris King to regain a good range of movement and sensation.The procedure at Leeds General Infirmary in northern England involved eight surgeons working for 12 hours. King lost most of both of his hands, except his thumbs, three years ago in an industrial accident involving a metal pressing machine. Now he's looking forward to holding a beer and wearing shirts with real buttons. He said there's no greater gift someone could give and he's urging people to discuss organ donation with their loved ones. The complex operation was performed by consultant plastic surgeon, Professor Simon Kay, who completed the UK's first hand transplant three years ago. He said a screening process made sure that King was an appropriate candidate, because it's important that transplant patients take their medication and go through rehabilitation. Professor Kay said because hand transplantations are unusual, there have been many requests for donations which have been rejected by families.He hopes donation rates will improve now that people can see the good it does.Details of exactly when the operation happened has not been revealed to prevent the donor from being identified. The donor's brother issued a statement on behalf of the family saying, \"Our brother was a kind, caring and considerate person who would have given the shirt off his back to help somebody in need.\"\"Learning that he had registered as an organ donor made our decision to support him donating so much easier.\"\"We are pleased that the double hand transplant operation was able to go ahead,
