The new exhibition includes an audio-visual recreation of what the ancient Roman city was like before and during the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D.STORY-LINE:Visitors to Pompeii often turn their minds to what it would have been like to be one of the residents engulfed by the devastating ash cloud. Now a vivid interpretation of that moment has been brought to life through an audio-visual presentation. Visitors feel as though they were in the Piazza in the centre of the city of Pompeii as the world around them comes crashing down.Architect, Paolo Mighetto says: \"We are in the Antiquarium of Pompeii because it is the very centre of the city and the connection between the old city and the new city. Italian archeologist Giuseppe Fiorelli designed the initial museum, which contained archaeological finds including molds of the bodies of people who were trapped in the ash. The musuem was destroyed by bombs in 1943, and reorganized in 1948 by Amedeo Maiuri. It closed in 1980 after the Naples earthquake. Now it's open to visitors once again, featuring a permanent exhibition called \"Sacra Pompeiana\", dedicated to the places of worship for pre-Roman Pompeii.Pompeii superintendent, Massimo Osanna says: \"After the earthquake of 1980, it (the museum) closed for 35 years and today it finally reopens like a modern visitor centre, with a virtual realisation, but also with the objects of the prior Roman culture of Pompeii, the sanctuary of Pompeii, and a new bookshop. So Pompeii entered in the contemporary world.\" Limestone restorer, Sara Matilde Masseroli explains how the molds were made of the bodies of the victims: \"We decided to exhibit one of the limestones in the Antiquarium room that was already exhibited in this building before the bombardments (earthquake). It is a limestone of one of the victims from the eruption, about 100 were made in total in 1863 when the great archaeologist, then superintendent, Giuseppe Fiorelli, created this technique, which consists of gluing a liquid plaster inside the hole left by the hardened ash from the victims' body once it decomposed.\"The exhibition continues in the Villa Imperiale, a luxurious building of the first century AD, never before open to the public.Mount Vesuvius erupted in AD 79 covering the Roman city of Pompeii in volcanic ash, and capturing everything from human beings to food exactly where they were at the time.LEAD IN:Pompeii's Antiquarium Museum has reopened to the public 36 years after an earthquake forced it to close.
