The Ohio-based group said earlier this month that it would play its scheduled May shows but cancel future appearances so that lead singer Nicholas Petricca could be with his father, who is suffering from early-onset Alzheimer's disease. \"Canceling anything for us is not something that we take lightly at all. We adore our fans and live music is the center of our world,\" Petricca said. \"So we didn't take it lightly but I really have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support and love from our fans and from our team.\" The group was among several honorees who walked the red carpet Wednesday (27 April 2016).at the ASCAP Pop Music Awards in Hollywood. Guitarist Eli Maiman said: \"It's not every day where you get honored alongside Prince and John Cougar Mellencamp. So just to be mentioned in the same sentence with those people is pretty incredible. It's been a long journey here, getting here. Like Nick said, we've been hitting the road hard – 300 days a year every year for five years. It's just a pleasure to get to celebrate what's been a big time for us.\"Other attendees at the event discussed the songwriting prowess of Prince, who died last week. They including R\u0026amp;B singer Ne-Yo, who said he's been listening to Prince music in recent days with his six-week-old son. \"I went out and purchased every piece of Prince that I could. Because it's really hard to find his stuff online. And I've just been kind of binging on it – me and little man, sitting back, listening to all of the greats,\" he said. Swedish producer-songwriter Max Martin, the man behind much of Taylor Swift's Grammy-winning \"1989,\" was named songwriter of the year for a record ninth time at the ASCAP event. \"Prince was actually one of my – he is the most important inspiration. He has always been for me. So that was a big loss. I can't – I don't know what to say about that. It's crazy,\" Martin said. \"Luka\" singer-songwriter Suzanne Vega recalled Prince writing her a fan letter of sorts about the song. \"It's handwritten and it's beautiful, beautiful handwriting with a little flower on the bottom of the letter -- which I treasure,\" she said. \"He said 'Luka' is the most compelling piece of music I've heard in a long time.
