She had a part in the first film he made, \"The Flamingo Kid,\" and he gave her her first speaking role as the character Mandy in the 1984 film.\"I don't think I had any lines to begin with at all but he wanted me to be in the movie 'cause I had auditioned and he knew he wanted me to be in it somehow. So he put me in the movie and then over the course of time I got a line or two and so that became my first speaking job. 'Oh you're so drunk.' That's my line (laughs).\"Marshall - the writer and director behind such sitcoms as \"Happy Days\" and \"Laverne \u0026 Shirley\" died Tuesday (19 JUNE) in a Burbank, California hospital of complications from pneumonia after having a stroke.  \"The Flamingo Kid,\" Marshall's first film - which he co-wrote and directed - is a coming of age story starring Matt Dillon. Tomei says she had a small role but a memorable experience that launched her career.\"I do remember him. I remember his ease and I remember his – I mean silly things that he – improv. Like, 'Oh, let's have all the girls laying down and will throw a firecracker and and then all the girls run. Like oh,' spontaneous ideas that he would bring to creation throughout the course of that shoot and it was ripe for pranks and mischief because it was the nature of that movie, it being a beach club and that kind of stuff.\"She says she does remember his kindness on set - and falling victim to at least one of his pranks.It was very significant to get to work with him and see his spirit and keep that spirit and he had this great tradition - I'm sure a lot of people will talk about it but he had this great tradition of throwing a pie in your face the day that you were wrapped (laughs) but I didn't know that at the time so even I got a pie in my face.
