Last year the teens grew over 1,000 pounds of fresh vegetables and herbs. One man is also launching a crusade against unhealthy food by inspiring young people about the pleasures of growing your own fruit and vegetables.Activist  Ron Finley is known by most people as the Gangsta Gardener\"They call me the Gangsta Gardener because I feel gardening is Gangsta. I feel growing your own food is Gangsta. I feel being educated is Gangsta. I feel beautifying your community is Gangsta,\" he explains.Ron helped pioneer the concept of \"Curbside\" and \"parkway\" gardening. That is growing greens in the most unlikely urban spaces.He was instrumental in helping convince the LA City Council to waive permits and fees for growing food on curbs and parkways. Prior to these new rules and regulations, Finley was actually issued an arrest warrant for illegally planting carrots in front of his home - which might help explain his name Gangsta.Finley explains: \"I want kids, I want people to be in touch with the soil because that's where the change comes from.\"He adds: \"If a kid grows kale, the kid eats kale. If they grow tomatoes, they eat tomatoes because now they have skin in the game.\"A lack of fresh fruits and vegetables has created \"Food Deserts\" in some of the poorest neighbourhoods of Los Angeles and it is this Finley wants to change.On a tour of a local grocery shop Finley is critical of what he sees.\"This is the culprit. This is what leads to people needing dialysis. It looks like a glorified liquor store. I mean these kind of foods are what leads to childhood obesity. Period,\" he says.William McCarthy is a professor at the University of California Los Angeles' Fielding School of Public Health.He explains: \"The folks who don't have access to fresh fruits and vegetables, the low-income folks, end up having much higher rates of uncontrolled hypertension with the resulting kidney failure and then becoming dependent on dialysis machines.\"McCarthy adds: \"A lot of that is attributable to the obesity that's associated with eating poorly for many years.\"According to the US Department of Agriculture, a \"food desert\" is a place where at least one-third of the population lives more than a mile from the nearest grocery or supermarket. Unlike wealthier neighbourhoods, that have a larger proportion of supermarkets, people's food choices are limited in these neighbourhoods. Many food deserts contain an overabundance of fast food chains selling cheap meat and dairy based foods that are high in fat, sugar and salt. This has lead to a high percentage of diabetes among residents of these \"Food Deserts\"Studies conducted in \"food deserts\" of Los Angeles and Chicago found death rates due to diabetes were twice that of neighbourhoods with better access to supermarkets.  The rising rate of diabetes has led to an influx of dialysis centres in these communities. The dialysis business is a big business. In 2015 Da Vita Corporation, one of America's largest for-profit owners of dialysis centres grossed over 8.6 Billion dollars. Its CEO earned over 13 million dollars in compensation that same year.Standing outside a dialysis centre in a poor neighbourhood and the problem is obvious to Finley.\"Why don't we see a fresh food stand here where they're instructing people how you won't need this if you eat properly?\" Back at A Place Called Home and the children are still busy digging through the dirt to get at the latest crop of potatoes.10 year-old Angel Rubin is looking forward to tasting some of the food she has helped to grow. She says: \"I know our food is real, because I see us picking up the food here.\" The food grown here goes straight through to the kitchens of A Place Called Home where the children will also learn cookery skills - perhaps helping to break the cycle of a reliance on fast-food and junk food.
