City officials are hoping that a series of around 450 low-energy LED lamps will shed light on its historic sites. STORY-LINE: With the click of a switch the ancient Roman Forum goes from gloomy shapes in the dark to a spectacular scene of marble columns, ancient temples and historic arches. The Italian Ministry of Culture unveiled a new lighting system in the Roman Forum on Tuesday evening (19th April 2016) with a special ceremony to turn on 450 LEDs placed around the ancient monuments. There were small round lights along pathways, long-thin stick-like lights, and larger soft-ball size lights focused on the monuments.\"There are a total of about 450 points of light, and we passed from the 65 kilowatts in the earlier installation to 18 kilowatts, because they are all LED,\" explains Maurizio Pinotti, Architect for the office of the Superintendent for the Colosseum and the Archaeological Area in the Centre of Rome. The new lights run the length of the Via Sacra, the main street of ancient Rome. They begin at the Arch of Titus, an arch that celebrates the victory of Emperor Titus in the Siege of Jerusalem, and extend all the way down to the Arch of Septimus Severus at the base of the Capitoline Hill. That marble arch celebrates the Emperor's victories over the Parthians. The Roman Forum was the centre of Roman political and social life. On one side there was the centre of Roman government, the Senate and on the other the Temple of the Vestal Virgins - a round building where the vestals kept a fire burning constantly. Now statues of the Vestal Virgins emerge from the shadows. According to Francesco Prosperetti, the Superintendent of the Archaeological Area including the Roman Forum, viewing the site at night time provides a fresh perspective. \"I think the light enhances in a certain way, it selects the image. During the day you are almost blinded by the multitude of marbles, of monuments of things you see all together. The light allows us to be more selective, just to see the most beautiful things, for what they are and what they mean.\" From the top of the Palatine Hill – where Roman Emperors lived, the illuminated view reveals the magnificent remains of the largest building in the Forum, the Basilica of Maxentius and Constantine. The lights vary from a white-gold light effect to a soft white light on the monuments.Lights illuminate the columns of the Temple of Antoninus and Faustina, making them stand out from the structure inside - a baroque church built much later.A team of architects, lighting experts and technicians worked a total of 3800 hours to install 6,000 meters (19,685 feet) of cables. Using LED, energy saving technology, they placed lights ranging between 7-80 watts throughout the Forum.Officials say they have tried many times to find a way to light up the Roman Forum at night but the cost was prohibitive and earlier attempts all failed. Archaeologist Alessandro D'Alessio says the project is exciting even for archaeologists. \"This type of illumination, that you can clearly only have at night, contributes to a scene setting of the archaeological area. Obviously this is a situation that is different from the daytime that we are used to – both the visitors, the tourists and even us archaeologists. I believe that at night, the use of the lights in an atmosphere immersed in the dark, makes it possible to better distinguish the individual monuments. It underlines the spatiality of this place.\" From April 22, 2016 visitors can take tours through the Roman Forum at night from 8pm until midnight. A maximum of 75 people can participate in a tour group and tours will be in Italian and English.LEAD IN: Ancient Rome is being illuminated at dusk to allow tourists to visit the city's most famous ruins once the sun sets.
