While white gowns reign supreme, their collections also contain splashes of colour and plenty of sparkle STORY-LINE:Preparing for one of New York's premier bridal events. Spring has sprung and weddings are at the forefront of many people's attention, especially at New York's Bridal Fashion Week. Backstage, models are being primped and preened - ready to showcase the latest gowns by top designers like Monique Lhuillier. She says the only clear trend is the need for designers to present more options. \"For me, jumpsuits are a great option, short dresses are a great option. I also like detachable skirts on dresses so you can convert the look and have two looks in one night without really changing the entire dress. I also love working with hand painted details and you'll see a lot of that in today's show. Lots of layering, collages of laces, really pushing the limits of how a back detail looks and how low it can go or what kind of back interest,\" Lhuillier says before the show. An outdoor garden was the setting for Lhuillier's show and her designs include lingerie-inspired elements with a touch of colour in rose, pistachio, antique ivory and caramel. She decorated some organza gowns with handpainted floral designs in asymmetrical layered tulle and silk organza. Deep necklines were prominent, with simple slip dresses offered along with bohemian gowns of lace and sheer skirts. Lhuillier also used corset bodices paired with cascading tulle skirts. At designer's Reem Acra's showcase, the final touches are being made backstage before her 2017 collection goes on show. She calls the collection \"very airy, very light.\"\"I've always felt that I am ahead of the game and I create the trend,\" she says. \"And today in this collection you're going to see a lot of new things: low backs with laced up backs. You're going to see laced up backs. Long, long, long trains. You're going to see detachable trains, detachable accessories that they are kind of interchangeable.\"For a bride looking to be just a bit daring, visible boning in corseting lent a uniqueness to some of Acra's fitted bodices. There was a ton of drama in extra-long trains and encrusted sheer overlays. Many of her dress tops were molded at the chest, bustier style, while she played with the lower halves. Acra put a twist on other trains, creating them to detach and also be used as veils. And she went for laced-up backs, both high and plunging, on some dresses.Over at Ines Di Santo's show, Spring was the inspiration for her collection. \"I went very soft, romantic, light. You can see through the layers of the lace, the legs, the tool, and sparkling beautiful laces,\" she says. Her backs and necklines were often illusion style, offering a barely there appearance. She included open bolero jackets for brides looking for a little cover, along with detachable skirt options for those looking to adapt the outfit for the reception. While many of her looks were fit for royalty, complete with extra-long trains, she also dabbled with ultra-short hemlines. Like other designers, Di Santo included fit-and-flare looks along with sheaths, A-line silhouettes, halter necks and princess ball gowns. This was also a runway dominated by sheers holding lots of floral creations in place.
