Various of vegetables growing in gardenLEADIN:Syrian refugee children are learning the basics of gardening at workshops in Lebanon.An NGO is teaching them to grow herbs and vegetables in small spaces to supplement their diets.STORYLINE:Excitement and smiles as Nabil Sarieddine shows his young audience the seeds they will be planting.The agronomist consultant is teaching the Syrian children the basics of micro-gardening.In the refugee camps and settlements where these refugees live, there is no access to land, but these classes show they can grow plants in even the tiniest of spaces.\"We planted basil. We placed soil and seeds and water and then placed them under the sun,\" says 12-year-old Wala who currently lives in nearby Chhim but hails from Daraa in southern Syria. \"We have to water them everyday so that they grow and become a nice plant that we can use for cooking,\" she continues.This is a pilot project led by the Italian NGO Intersos in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Food Programme.This activity recycles old water bottles that would otherwise be thrown away.So as well as helping Syrian households become more self-sufficient with their food supply, it's positive for the environment.The NGO plans to teach these skills to many more refugees.\"We will conduct 250 lecture sessions about micro-gardening, on how we can make use of the smallest area possible and plant it with our own vegetables. And how to recycle our leftovers to make compost out of them and plant with them once again,\" says Sarieddine.Plastic barrels offer a slightly bigger plot than the water bottles, but the principles are still the same.For some of these children, it brings back memories of life in Syria.\"We had land in front of the house and we used to plant in it,\" says twelve-year-old Suzanne from Aleppo.But in Lebanon, the family has nowhere to scatter seeds.Intersos is also trialling a one metre squared kitchen garden at their centre.It's a prototype for spaces that will be rolled out across the country,The aim is to have a total of 250 square metres of land divided into small plots for refugees to cultivate.Dana Kanaan, project manager at Intersos for the micro-gardening project, says it will help combat the limited access to fertile ground.\"Mainly the refugees are not allowed to work on the land or sometimes the landlord doesn't allow access to agriculture and we have different sets of rules that bans the use of land,\"  she says.\"So this is an appropriated, small piece of land that they can use and they can generate food from\".As well as supplementing the diets of impoverished households, tending to plants could have psychological benefits.\"You come in contact with nature, with the soil, with the vegetables and to a lot of people it reminds them of their land because these are activities they are used to it and they are attached to their land,\" explains Kanaan.The children enjoy watering the vegetable garden at the centre.
