The robotics, smart home appliances, and unmanned drones are all vying for attention at the Hong Kong International Electronics Fair.STORY-LINE:The Hong Kong Electronics Fair is the largest spring electronics event in Asia with more than 2,800 exhibitors from 20 countries and regions taking part, including new participants from Austria, Liechtenstein and Russia. Major electronics production centres such as the Chinese mainland, Korea and Taiwan have also set up their own pavilions at this year's show.Among the most eye-catching exhibits are the favourite of the tech lovers – robots. From the smallest drone bots to much larger industrial machines, there are robots of all shapes and sizes showing off their tricks. But if watching robots performing is not exciting enough, you can also make your own robot, and program it by yourself. Targeting everything from schools to factories, the China based electronics company designed more than 20 kinds of robot kits which could be made to up to 400 variations of robots, according to Peter Lee.\"They can learn how to assemble a robot, they can learn how to program it and how to play with it. The best advantage of our platform is that we integrate the electronics modules, the mechanical parts and the software solutions together for the school students, to let them know what it Makeblock and to learn robotics,\" says Lee.Robots can also be your best colleague. The dual arm collaborative robot \"Baxter\" was first introduced by Rethink Robotics back in 2012 but is now gaining popularity on the production lines in factories in Asia. The Hong Kong based technology provider Intelligent CAD/CAM Techonology Ltd introduced the \"Baxter\" to their company, offering programming and hardware services to attract factories in Hong Kong and in Mainland China. Stanley Ho, the company's sales manager says the robot can solve the manpower shortage problem in the factory production lines. \"So normally for robotic solution, if the job is suitable for automation, normally in 1.5 to two years, you can return your investment. It means that, after that you can earn more money compare with that in the past,\" says Ho. In the fair drones are dominating - from regular camera carrier drones to mini drones the size of a coin (2.5cm x 2.5cm x 2cm).However, no drone-savvy hobbyist would not be satisfied with just flying the drone. A Hong Kong based electronics and toys designer is combining the two latest hits together – virtual reality image and drones.Setting their factory in Mainland China, Dowellin Toys Platic Factory (Solar Tune) spent about one year putting a camera image onto a smartphone screen which can be projected as a 3D image with the use of virtual reality goggles, according to Stanley Chan the sales manager of the company.Chan says the virutal reality projection and drone camera could also be used in town-planning or property construction purposes in the future.\"The concept is that people would like to satisfy (their wish) to see the scenario from the sky when they are playing the drone. He would like to see the scenario immediately, not only on the phone, he would like to see the effect in 3D, that's why we make the 3D virtual reality glasses,\" says Chan. The Hong Kong Electronics Fair runs 13-16 April at Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.LEAD INAsia's largest electronics show is all about robotics and the smartest new technology products.
