The world heritage list is really important for the tombstones because they have now been given a new chance to survive, they have been endangered up to now. This tells you a lot about our negligence, about our poverty, our lack of culture, but it is really important that stecci now are a part of the world's heritage.\"12. Medieval times do not recognise this kind of personalisation, especially not in this shape or form. From 20 authors (engravers) in total, we have seven or eight here in Boljuni, and that is pretty amazing, like we have here our own kind of Renaissance.\"19. Mid of tombstones 20. Wide of man herding sheep between tombstonesLEADIN:Medieval tombstones found in the Balkan region have been granted World Heritage status by UNESCO.The tombstones, known as stecci, feature intricate engravings that historians say give a glimpse of local life during the Middle Ages. STORYLINE:This graveyard in southern Bosnia takes visitors back in time. The Medieval tombstones, known as stecci, bear engravings and inscriptions that provide a window onto the culture that created them. Stecci are one of the newest additions to UNESCO's World Heritage list, given official status at a recent summit in Istanbul. UNESCO names 30 sites located in Bosnia and Herzegovina, western Serbia, western Montenegro and central and southern Croatia, with cemeteries dating from the 12th to the 16th centuries.The cemetery at Stolac is one of the 22 sites in Bosnia where stecci can be found. The site was built at around the end of the 14th century. Many of its 135 tombstones are shaped like coffins, with engravings depicting men giving the Medieval Bosnian salute of a raised hand.Professor Miroslav Palameta, a Medieval historian from the University of Mostar in Bosnia, was part of the team working on the world heritage nomination.\"Stecci are, in fact, the most original heritage that Bosnia can offer to the UNESCO list, both the European list and World list. These are in fact, necropoles (ancient cemeteries), and they tell us all about the rich context of their time, which we can fully reconstruct now, and also they are interesting as architectural constructions, sculptures and art compositions.\"Palameta says the engravings depict various events from Medieval history, giving historians and archaeologists a lot of information about life in the Balkan region during that period.The surviving tombstones are still standing despite the turmoil of war and recent instability in the Balkans. But many of Bosnia's stecci were damaged and destroyed during the Balkan war of the 1990s and many have been neglected due to lack of funds. Local historian Miro Raguz welcomes the UNESCO ruling because he hopes it will encourage his nation to preserve the stecci for future generations.\"Stecci are Medieval tombstones which to this day today survive as a wonder of the world. This tells you a lot about our negligence, about our poverty, our lack of culture, but it is really important that stecci now are a part of the world's heritage.\"Raguz says the Bosnian state and a national historical association have now allocated enough funds to preserve and protect the tombstones.The second largest stecci site in Bosnia is in the nearby village of Boljuni.This cemetery contains 273 tombstones, many of which have been engraved with the Medieval Bosnian script known as Bosancica, or Bosnian Cyrillic. The two main sculptors of the tombstones were the blacksmiths Grubac and Semorad: the first worked on shaping the stone and the second carved the inscriptions.Raguz says the pair were ahead of their time. \"It is an interesting fact that here, in Boljuni, in southern Herzegovina, we have the phenomenon of personalisation, most often the engraver of the inscriptions, who signs himself as 'Dijak' or 'Semorad', which is in fact a Renaissance phenomenon,\" he says.\"Medieval times do not recognise this kind of personalisation, especially not in this shape or form.
