The CANA-CSRS was fitted with oceanographic equipment and now sails the Mediterranean carrying out scientific tests.STORY-LINE:Cruising along Lebanon's coastline, the CANA-CSRS has a special mission.This boat used to be used purely for fishing but has now been converted into a research vessel to monitor pollution.It's kitted out with high-tech equipment, thanks mainly to financing from the Italian government, and gifted to the Lebanese National Council for Scientific Research.Biologist Stefano Lelli left Rome for Lebanon ten years ago and says the waters in this area are \"astonishing\".\"I found people of great humanity. But also the extraordinary conditions of this sea, which on one side is very worrying due to the pollution and the bad practices along the Lebanese coastline, but most of all is very surprising for the peculiarities of this area,\" he explains.Lelli believes the history of the sea here can hint at the impact of the Suez Canal expansion.\"This area lies exactly on the borderline, at the point of contact between two masses of water that were originally separated: the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea,\" he explains.\"This gives us the advantage to study today what it is most likely going to happen tomorrow in the rest of the Mediterranean, that is the invasion of species coming from the Red Sea that are able to reach our coasts.\"The CANA was transformed into an oceanographic research vessel in 2009.Its original task was to monitor an oil spill caused by an Israeli bombardment in the 2006 Lebanon-Israel war. But thanks to improved equipment, its activities have expanded.\"We were able to expand our studies and research. We have reached a stage where we are finally able to buy highly technological equipment that is not available in the Middle East, and we can use these technologies for our scientific goals and to conduct research that could not have been done before,\" says Gaby Khalaf, CNRS Director of National Centre for Marine Sciences and CANA Project Task Manager.Today, he's monitoring seafloor sediment.\"It's reduced sediment and it's an indicator of the quality of the bad sea, the quality of the water, the quality of sediments,\" Khalaf explains.\"And here you can find specific macro-invertebrates, specific biota, as an indication for the pollution, for the water pollution.
