The Sweetwaters Sanctuary was opened in 1993 and is now home to almost 40 chimpanzees.STORY-LINEStanding up on two legs and gesturing like children, these apes are all refugees. After being abused, persecuted and orphaned in their range states, they have finally found a home at Sweetwaters sanctuary in Nanyuki, Kenya. The Sweetwaters Sanctuary was opened in 1993 in an agreement between the Ol Pejeta conservancy, Kenya Wildlife Service and the Jane Goodall institute. They pledged to provide life long refuge to orphaned and abused chimpanzees from civil war stricken countries in West and Central Africa. \"This sanctuary was established, created with sole purpose of creating long life refuge for those chimpanzees that were abused, persecuted, orphaned in the range states. By range states I mean those chimpanzees that occur naturally in the wild in Rwanda, Burundi, Congo and those Western African countries,\" explains Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary vet, Dr. Stephen Ngulu.Chimpanzee and humans DNA is more than 95 per cent the same according to scientific research and for that reason they are often used for medical research.Chimpanzees are on the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) list of endangered species because of loss of their natural habitat as well as commercial hunting for bushmeat.\"There is bush meat trade in West Africa, in Central Africa, there is illegal trade in great apes, illegal trade in great apes from Europe to Russia, to Asia, to Asian zoos, to China. It's just like the illegal trade in ivory and rhino horn so the bush meat trade, the illegal trade in great apes, the demand for apes as pets, demand for apes as a performance in circuses so that's what has led to their decline in numbers,\" explains Dr Ngulu.Ol Pejeta conservancy set aside 250 acres of land for the sanctuary and spends around 6,000 US dollars on each ape every year. This money pays for the hire of care givers as well as their medical and food costs. There are currently 39 chimpanzees at the Sweetwaters sanctuary. According to Dr. Ndulu the future for chimpanzees will not improve unless the human race becomes more aware of their fragility. He says:\"It (their future) can only be guaranteed if we as a human race stop demand for wildlife products; stop demand for bush meat trade, we stop illegal activities in these animals, we stop keeping these animals as pets, we stop destroying their habitat. When you destroy a forest, when you cut down trees and do not plant another tree then you are destroying their home. When you destroy their home it means we bring them to a sanctuary like this one and that's not the ideal situation. They should be in the wild, they should be in their natural environment but we as humans are destroying that.\"Although the ideal situation would be for these chimpanzees never to have left their natural homes, at least for now they still get to roam freely, stay safe and receive the best care the sanctuary can provide them.LEAD IN:A sanctuary in Kenya is providing care for chimpanzees that have been orphaned and abused in civil war stricken countries in West and Central Africa.
