However, an early release has been reported. STORY-LINE An ordinary West Bank family spending time together. But this family are missing one member. A twelve year-old girl. She is believed to be the youngest female Palestinian ever sent to an Israeli prison.According to court documents provided by the military, the 12-year-old girl, whose name could not be published because of her age, approached the West Bank settlement of Carmei Tsur on 9 February with a knife hidden under her shirt.A security guard ordered her to halt, and a resident instructed her to lie on the ground and told her to remove the knife from under her shirt, which she did. An amateur video clip aired on Israeli TV showed the resident asking the girl, wearing her school uniform, whether she had come to kill Jews, and she says yes.The girl's mother, Sabha, is adamant that a girl that tender in years could do nothing of the kind, while her father, Ismail, alleges that his daughter was beaten during questioning. The Israeli human rights group B'Tselem, citing court records, said the girl was interrogated twice without either a lawyer or her parents being present. Nine days after the incident, her lawyers reached a plea bargain that convicted her of voluntary attempted manslaughter and bearing a knife, and she was sentenced to four and-a-half months in prison and her parents fined about 2,000 dollars, according to the court documents.In the documents, the girl says she understands the terms of the plea bargain and her jail sentence.Lawyers and relatives say she was not allowed to see her mother until March 28, some six weeks after the incident, and that the girl is not allowed physical contact with her mother.Tareq Barghout, a lawyer assisting the girl, said the court accepted a request to move her to a female juvenile facility in the West Bank, but that her family refused, fearing it was filled with drug addicts and violent offenders.Moreover, a pardon request has been ignored, which, according to Barghout, is not a great surprise.\"As far as I know, during the history of the Palestinian prisoner movement there was five times where people applied for a pardon request, and the head of the Israeli Defence Force didn't respond to any of them,\" he says. However, on Monday afternoon Barghout said the prison service had ordered the girl's release between April 24 and May 8, more than a month ahead of schedule. That still means she faces several weeks in prison. The case has drawn attention to, amongst other things, the duel justice systems in the West Bank - one for Palestinians and one for Israelis. The Israeli military had no immediate comment.Israel captured the West Bank in the 1967 Middle East war, and Palestinian residents there are subject to a system of military law that can sentence suspects as young as 12 to prison. In contrast, Israeli settlers, as well as Jewish and Arab citizens of Israel, are subject to Israeli civil law, which does not allow anyone under 14 to go to prison. Palestinian residents of East Jerusalem, which Israel annexed after the 1967 war, are also subject to Israeli civil law. The youngest male prisoner is believed to be even younger. Last week, the Ynet news site reported that an 11-year-old Jerusalem Palestinian convicted in a stabbing attack has been sent to a juvenile facility run by Israeli social services.
