In regions such as Blida it's particularly important as it reminds them of their Spanish ancestors who moved there after the fall of the Arab empire.STORY-LINE:Globalisation and new technologies have brought a flood of cultural influences to the streets of modern Algeria.Foreign chart hits and Algeria's own \"Rai\" popular music can be found on devices in pockets all over the country.Algeria has a rich musical history, incorporating elements of neighbouring cultures and welcoming the instruments, rhythms and melodies from each wave of inward migration over the centuries.But it is the Andalusian genre of music Ã¢Â€Â“ which flourished from the 9th to the 15th century - that even today holds a particularly special place in Algerian hearts.Andalusian music, known as musica al-ala in Arabic, is the classical style born in Muslim Iberia from collaborations of Persian, Kurdish, Jewish, Arab and Christian musicians living in the Arab Dynasty. Western influences were interwoven to form a new genre with its own character: the songs are poetic and lyrical, religious and philosophical.Preserved and revered, the present incarnation of Andalusian music has taken on a nostalgic tone, almost wistful in remembering this hey day.In the central area of Blida, 40 kilometres (25 miles) south of Algiers, the Al Adabiya association is dedicated to maintaining and promoting this music.Mohamed Belarbi is its president.\"The history of the Andalusian music in Blida dates back to the arrival of Spanish Muslims from Andalusia after the fall of Granada in 1492. A marabout (Muslim religious leader) brought all those people and established the city of Blida in a place called Al Joun, which simply means refugees. Musicians used to play on instruments in their homes, but by the beginning of the 20th century the music became more official when several associations were founded between 1920 and 1927. Al Adabiya was the first of these.\"Despite the strong nostalgic element of the music, it is a form that continues to be relevant to Algerian communities in 2016.While the internet brings an almost overwhelming abundance of global music, within al-ala there are subtle sub-genres (called nubahs) that speak to regional identities. Farid Khoudja is a musician specialising in Sanaa, one of the purest nubahs, mainly played in the central region, which is known for its clear Spanish influences and the use of mandolins and, as Khoudja demonstrates, the rabab.\"I play the kind of music called 'Sanaa' in the Metija region and Algiers. We share the texts and the genres with the schools of Constantina in the East and Tlemcen in the West. Every musical school has its own style, but we all share the same poetic subjects like love and a nostalgia for Andalusia.\"Each region has its own identity, manifested in the intricacies of the melodies and the choice of instruments.As well as embracing regional identities, al-ala has an additional appeal for those rejecting international and Algerian pop music.Some believe these Western forms of music promote promiscuity, sex, drugs and violence.Djaouida Naghliz is more than happy to encourage her daughter to get involved in this genre of music.\"We adore the Andalusian heritage and music.
