Never before have we known of a situation when a single mosquito bite could result in a devastating birth defect. The top priority in the response to zika is to protect pregnant women. We're literally learning more about Zika everyday, and in the six months of our response, we've learned and done a number of things to protect Americans better and we wish we had more rapid and robust support for funding to do even more.\"11. Tim Kaine (D) Virginia: \"So we've got this massive public health challenge and the American public is worried about it and we're supposed to fight Zika, and that's what the Senate did, we fought Zika. But the bill comes back to us and it's: 'let's fight Planned Parenthood, that's more important than fighting Zika. Let's take money out of the Affordable Care Act. That's more important than fighting zika.' This is why people hate Congress. This is why people hate Washington.\" 13. Cutaway STORYLINE: Dr. Tom Frieden, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said that the Zika virus is \"both unprecedented and tragic\" and hoped for more funding for research a day after Senate Republicans rejected a new Democratic proposal to provide Zika funding. \"We've learned and done a number of things to protect Americans better and we wish we had more rapid and robust support for funding to do even more,\" Frieden said.He testified before a Senate Foreign Relations panel on Wednesday.
