All the technology around us -- from our shoes to our homes -- was imagined, designed and built by engineers. Engineers solve problems and make our lives better and more enjoyable.

In this video, learn about what it takes to be an engineer from real-life engineering students. Peer into the minds of middle school students and hear their dreams, then listen to older students tell of what attracted them to the field: A thirst for knowledge, basic curiosity, a drive to learn and to make the world a better place are at the core of engineering.

The engineering profession uniquely releases the spirit of innovation and process, in ways no other field can. From fundamental research to everyday tech, engineers create incredible new solutions and discoveries to improve society and spur the imagination.

Each year, the NSF Directorate for Engineering invests nearly $1 billion in engineering research and education to build and strengthen a national capacity for innovation. Over time, these investments lead to a stronger economy, enhanced national security, and a better quality of life for all Americans.
