China's current elite sports system is known for its extreme strictness and regular schools don't offer as much extracurricular sports as parents would like.Established in the 1950s, the state-led sports training system was tasked with rallying national pride.But changes must happen, if China still wants a top spot in competitive gymnastics and Chinese sports officials believe they need to shift away from the old, rigid state-run system and towards a more club-based approach to sports. The state-led system is losing steam despite churning out hundreds of Olympic gold medalists and world champions in the past.In the world of gymnastics, Chinese officials are challenged in popularising the sport after decades of keeping it from the public.Taking cues from gymnastics powerhouses such as the United States and Japan, Chinese sports officials believe the answer lies with popularising the sport.There are only 7,000 Chinese gymnasts competing nationally, Wang said. In comparison, the United States has nearly 150,000 competing gymnasts at all levels.Critics argue that for the vast majority of children in the state-run system – those who do not make it to the highest levels of competing – are left ill equipped to deal with life outside of competitive sports.But not everyone thinks the old system is to blame.After decades of rapid growth, China has become the world's second largest economy. Its people have much fatter wallets and far more life choices for themselves and their children. The slim chance of success through sports schools has lost its appeal.Sports officials also know the system is a thing of the past. Reforms at state sports schools are also under discussions. Officials say the plan is to gradually turn state sports schools over to education authorities, so the young athletes will no longer only focus on sports training but become normal students expected of the same academic standards as their peers.If the reform should be successful, the training path toward the Olympic gold will still be paved with sweat, rigour and sacrifice, but there will be a
