It is market day in the Brussels neighbourhood of Molenbeek.Recent events have put a strain on the community. Residents in this neighbourhood where some of the Brussels attackers came from feel a sense of siege, from the media, from their fellow citizens.A controversial gathering against 'Islamists' in the area by a little known French far right group this Saturday has been banned by the local mayor. Concerned members of the community are meeting to discuss how they will respond if any do ignore the ban. Locals see the planned march as provocative, and there are fears that things could get out of hand.Last Sunday, hundreds of black-clad football hooligans broke up a solemn wake at Brussels' Bourse Square for the 32 victims of the March 22 attacks on the airport and subway system, and police had to bring in water cannons before order could be restored. Dave Sinardet is Professor of Political Science at Brussels University. He has been watching the evolution of Belgium's far right. \"Of course jihadist attacks like the ones we have just seen are fertile ground for extreme-right political parties and movements,\" he says.Even in the Netherlands, where one arrest was made linked to a possible future attack this week, fire-brand politician Geert Wilders is using the latest bombings to boost his popularity. \"We can see that in several European countries the themes tackled by the extreme right are popular in a certain part of the population, and that other parties, on the right side of the spectrum but not on the extreme right, tend to focus on these themes too,\" Sinardet said. The atmosphere of trepidation is fertile ground for the far right. In Belgian politics, they are represented by the Vlaams Belang party. The party has long been opposed to further Muslim migration to Belgium and now they are saying 'I told you so'.Tom Van Grieken is President of Vlaams Belang party and member of the Flemish Parliament.\"The attacks we have seen here in Brussels, but actually the attacks all over Europe at the moment, are of course the most sad example that everything which we have warned for came true. It's sad to say that what we have said already, more than ten or fifteen years ago, becomes reality nowadays,\" says Van Grieken. His party now wants to restore the death penalty, even though a ban on capital punishment has been a cornerstone of human rights legislation in the European Union. Even though such proposals stand next to no chance of passing, the political pendulum is swinging to the right because of the attacks. The Vlaams Belang stands out on this issue. However, today it is facing competition from the NVA (New Flemish Alliance centre right party) which is not an extreme-right wing party but which has, in the last few years, stood out on issues such as immigration, security and other related issues. The Belgian government announced on Thursday that it would push through a \"newcomer's declaration\" for migrants coming to live in Belgium and who have to commit in writing to core Belgian values and respect freedom of religion, gender equality and other basic rights. It might seem innocuous now, but insisting on such rules would have been considered extremist not so long ago.\"When we started Vlaams Belang party, the political debate was on the centre left side of the spectrum, nowadays the political debate is on the centre right.
