Low shot of Underground 'Tube' train arriving at Holborn Underground station 37. Mid of passengers walking onboard 'Tube' train and doors closing38. Pan left of 'Tube' train moving away from station platformLEADIN:A new experiment at one London Underground 'Tube' station is urging busy morning commuters to go against decades of well-engrained habits. For years, 'Tube' passengers in the British capital were told to \"stand on the right and walk on the left\", but at one central London station that's no longer the case.STORYLINE:Another busy morning commute in central London, but this is one with a difference. At the central Holborn Station - where the Piccadilly and Central lines regularly rumble by - these unwitting passengers are taking part in an experiment which aims to cut congestion at peak times. They're being asked to stand on both sides of two upward-moving escalators so more passengers can be ferried up from the platform level.\"Certain stations in our network are really busy in the morning peak especially,\" says Mark Evers, director of customer strategy at London Underground.\"Holborn station is one where actually we see congestion starting to form at the bottom of our escalators, so the trial that we're currently conducting is about trying to get people to stand on both sides of some of our escalators cause we've found that that moves more people through the station.\"According to Transport for London (TFL), the government body responsible for the transport system in the Greater London area, a previous trial found standing on both sides reduced congestion by 30 percent. But to busy London commuters, standing on the left goes against decades of well-engrained habits. An unwritten London code goes; \"Stand on the right, walk on the left.\"\"So, the Tube network is 150-years-old and for much of that, certainly for as long as we've had escalators on the network - it's been engrained into almost the DNA of Londoners that they need to stand on the right of an escalator and allow people to walk past them on the left,\" says Evers.\"So, it's a very significant change in behaviours that we're trying to introduce at this station.\"The six-month escalator trial started in mid-April and will continue till October. New signs and customer information are on display to prompt passengers to adapt their habits. There's even this friendly hologram which offers light-hearted messages that play on words about standing.Evers says they chose to conduct the trial at Holborn because of its 23.4-metre tall escalator, which often deters passengers from walking on the left hand side at all.TFL say research has shown escalators with a vertical height of more than 18.5 metres may be more effective to encourage standing on both sides because fewer passengers have the energy to walk.Holborn is also one of the busiest stations in London's whole 'Tube' network - around 56 million people flow through the station every year.\"Most escalators across our network those escalators aren't really tall, you would get more people through them if you had people walking up them,\" says Evers.\"The issue that we have these escalators at Holborn station is just that they're so tall, people get to the bottom of it and it looks like trying to ascend Everest or something like that. \"So, what we find is people don't walk up on the left and we carry nothing but air up that side of the escalator. So, this is a way to try to double the capacity by getting people to stand on both sides.\"But what do busy morning commuters make of this change to their daily journey?\"I think it's utter madness,\" says Amy Pirt.\"It's busy enough, it's bad enough the way it is, but it works so I think it should stay the way it is and don't mess with something which works.\"Passenger Sarah Tirvuncic is concerned about losing a useful exercise session in the morning.\"I used to really notice that if I was going up the escalators every day that I was able to fly up stairs in my office as well,\" she says.\"And I know that after I left my job where I was coming up a big escalator that that goes down very suddenly.\"\"It sounds a bit daft in my opinion, but I'm one of these kind of slightly impatient people that doesn't like standing behind other people,\" says Ben Harris.\"I'm usually quite keen to get where I'm going in the time when I want to get there.\"Passenger Peter Moran thinks it's a good idea, but says it may be hard to change other Londoners' minds.\"It maximises the space on the escalator itself so saves loads of gaps in between people walking up the stairs,\" he says.\"A lot of people, you can see them huffing and puffing behind you when you're still on the escalator, so it will take a bit of a culture change for people.\"Evers admits they've had a mix of reactions so far, and that will influence their decision as to whether implement it the system permanently.\"The results so far are mixed and that's the whole purpose of the trial, to try to work out what are the ways that we're going to get more people adopting this sort of behaviour,\" he says.\"We'll review the results of it and if we think that's it's something which we can do on a more permanent basis, then that's something that we'll consider in due course.\"Evers says the trial is not a way of avoiding improving infrastructure in stations - there are currently plans to install a new entrance and ticket hall at Holborn in the early 2020s.First opened in 1863, London's 402 kilometre-long 'Tube' network sees around 1.34 billion passengers annually. On 4 December 2015, 4.821 million passengers travelled on the 'Tube', making it the network's busiest day ever.====Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: info@aparchive.com.
