The works range from large scale installations inspired by the Arab Spring, to paintings focusing on the plight of Syrian refugees, and sculptures drawing inspiration from the native plants of Iraq.STORY-LINE:This is \"Arab Spring\" by the French-Algerian artist Kader Attia, shown at the Unlimited section of Art Basel, the world's leading contemporary art fair.The installation consists of 16 museum glass display cases that have been smashed to pieces by the artist.It invokes memories of the events of 2011, when many streets in the Middle East were filled with stone throwing protesters demanding change.But the piece also focuses on the plight of museums since the Arab Spring.\"He built a monument to all these artworks that have disappeared,\" says Gianni Jetzer, Curator of Art Basel Unlimited.\"So he shows actually the helplessness of the national and the international community to protect museums from political upheaval and insecurity.\"The piece is one of more than 4,000 artworks from 284 galleries that are shown at this years' edition of the art fair.According to art insurer, Axa Art, the total value of the works shown here is more than three-million euros (3.4 million US dollars), a slight increase on previous years.Museum directors, art collecting billionaires and the general public can buy any of the pieces shown during the week, if they can afford them.A few galleries based in the Middle East have had their applications for booth space at the fair accepted, after a notoriously hard selection process that sometimes takes years.One of them is The Third Line, a Dubai-based art dealer showing \"Study for a Monument\" by Iranian artist Abbas Akhavan.Akhavan's floor installation consists of bronze-cast reproductions of plants native to the region between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in Iraq.The gallery does not want to disclose the price for the work, and it has not yet been sold, but according to manager Thibault Geffrin, just being able to represent an artist at Art Basel is a great step forward for the gallery.\"Basel is the best fair in the world and every gallery wants to be a part of the fair. So we are very glad to be in the show this year. Also every collector, every single person who works in the art world are here at this moment.\"Another Middle Eastern artist showing work at the fair is Wael Shawky.His huge installation \"Cabaret Crusades\" consists of glass marionettes.The marionettes are shown in the Unlimited section of the fair and were also used in a film about the European crusaders' campaigns in the Middle East.Another Dubai-based gallery at the show is Grey Noise.The gallery is at Art Basel for the first time and is representing the Lebanese artist Caline Aoun.The installation consists of large sheets that are actually made out of the top layer of a road in Lebanon.\"The work is titled \"Remote Local\" so when we were talking about this project with her she was really interested in the idea of the fact that she is transporting her immediate surroundings, or her observations, to a remote location such as Art Basel,\" says gallery owner Umer Butt.\"And that became the departure where she then started looking at how familiar situations are made more intimate and more focused when you look at them very closely.\"At the booth of German and Lebanese gallery Sfeir-Semler a number of works by different artists are shown, including a painting by Berlin based, but Syrian born, artist Marwan.\"Untitled\" shows a man in a green jumper and jeans. In \"I Strongly Believe in Our Right to be Frivolous\" by Lebanese artist Mounira Al Solh, Syrian refugees living in Lebanon are depicted on yellow sheets of paper.But Art Basel is not just about selling Middle Eastern art - it's an opportunity for the region's collectors and museum directors to buy it.According to Todd Levin, a New York based art advisor, the Middle East is experiencing a boom in new museums and galleries and this has resulted in a spending spree.\"For the next three years there will be a tremendous amount of money flowing in to the art market (from the Middle East). This is due to the fact that there are a humber of large museums being built right now, mostly for impressionist and contemporary work,\" he says. \"And those museums are going to need to be filled. So in the short term they are on a buying spree in the Middle East, trying to fill up all their museum spaces with work.
